Danfoss EV220BW Servo Solenoid Valve for Drinking Water
Description
EV220BW servo-operated drinking water solenoid valve, DN 15 to 50
The Danfoss EV220BW is an indirect servo-operated 2/2-way solenoid valve range made for drinking-water and general neutral-liquid service, from DN 15 to DN 50 with G1/2 to G2 connections. It is offered with an Eco brass body (lead free, below 0.1 %) for neutral and slightly aggressive liquids and non-flammable gases, or with a stainless steel body for neutral and aggressive liquids and non-flammable gases, in both cases with EPDM seals, a built-in filter, a water-hammer-damped design and a clip-on coil with enclosure up to IP67. Seven Star LLC supplies the EV220BW in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

How the EV220BW works
In the NC version the armature presses the valve plate onto the pilot orifice when the coil is off, and the pressure built up above the diaphragm through the equalising orifice holds the main orifice shut. With voltage on, the armature lifts, the pilot orifice opens, pressure above the diaphragm falls and the inlet pressure lifts the diaphragm. The valve needs at least 0.3 bar differential pressure to hold open. The NO version is open when de-energised and closes when voltage is applied. Because the opening depends on line pressure the valve is a good fit for mains-pressure water supply rather than gravity feeds, for which the assisted-lift EV250BW is more suitable.
Eco brass or stainless steel body
Choose Eco brass for treated drinking water, heating and cooling water, and neutral liquids, where its dezincification resistance and lead-free composition help. Choose the stainless steel body when the liquid is aggressive or the water quality is poor, such as brine or fluids with higher chloride content, subject always to the compatibility of EPDM with the medium. Both versions share the same dimensions class and the same Kv values.
EV220BW compared with related Danfoss valves
| Valve | Key characteristics |
|---|---|
| EV220BW | DN 15–50, 0.3–10 bar, Eco brass or stainless, drinking water |
| EV250BW | DN 10–22, 0–10 bar, assisted lift, Eco brass |
| EV220W | DN 10–50, 0.2–10 bar, brass, compact, EPDM or NBR |
| EV212B | DN 2–4.5, 0–12 bar, stainless, isolating diaphragm |
Coil options and power consumption
The valve body is ordered without a coil. The clip-on coils named in the datasheet include BB024AS (24 V, 50 Hz, 11 W, 19 VA, code 018F7358), BB230AS (220–230 V, 50 Hz, 11 W, 19 VA, code 018F7351), the DC coils BB012DS (12 V DC, 13 W, code 018F7396) and BB024DS (24 V DC, 16 W, code 018F7397), and the BE240CS coil (018F6783) with a −25 to 55 °C ambient range. The AC coils are rated for −40 to 80 °C ambient and the DC coils for −40 to 50 °C, so a hot enclosure favours AC coils.
Switching times by size
The datasheet lists indicative times for water, from 40 ms to open and 350 ms to close at the smallest size, rising to 5000 ms to open and 10000 ms to close at DN 50. Slow closing at the larger sizes is part of the water-hammer damping, so it must be allowed for when a sequence depends on closing time.
Selection and ordering checklist
- Body material: Eco brass or stainless steel.
- Size and connection from Kv value and available differential pressure.
- Function NC or NO and the fail-safe position.
- Coil type and voltage (BB, BE clip-on coils; AC or DC).
- Medium and temperature up to 90 °C; ambient temperature near the coil.
- Minimum pressure difference of at least 0.3 bar in all operating cases.
Installation, commissioning and maintenance
The valve has a built-in filter, but it should still be inspected periodically and cleaned according to the datasheet when flow drops. Exercise the valve at least every 24 hours in water service to limit sticking, mount at the permitted angle with the flow arrow respected, and keep water within the recommended hardness (6 to 18 °dH) and conductivity (50 to 800 µS/cm) values to limit scaling and dezincification. Do not leave warm water stagnant in the valve above 25 °C.
Typical applications in Oman and the GCC
Typical uses include main inlet valves and zoning in houses, apartments and commercial buildings, washing and laundry machines, kitchens, food processing, and heating or cooling water circuits including chilled-water brine. In the Gulf the 80 °C ambient rating with AC coils helps in hot plant rooms, and stainless bodies suit coastal or brackish water locations.

About brand
Danfoss is the Danish engineering group that makes refrigeration and air-conditioning controls, heating components, variable speed drives and mobile hydraulics. Mads Clausen founded it on 1 September 1933 at his parents' farm in Nordborg on the island of Als, after making his first refrigeration expansion valve in 1932. Nordborg is still the group's headquarters, and Danfoss remains controlled by the Clausen family through the Bitten & Mads Clausen Foundation.

- 1950s: Rapid growth turns Nordborg into a Danfoss town with housing and schools for its workforce.
- 1968: Danfoss launches its VLT frequency converter, one of the first mass-produced AC drives.
- 2014: Acquisition of the Finnish drives maker Vacon, now the VACON brand.
- 2021: Acquisition of Eaton's hydraulics business.
Choosing Danfoss products
For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.
Where Danfoss products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Danfoss drives run pumps, fans and compressors in district cooling plants, water and wastewater stations, desalination and building HVAC. Danfoss pressure switches, transmitters and solenoid valves are built into chillers, refrigeration plants, boilers and hydraulic systems, and AB-QM valves balance chilled-water circuits in large buildings.
