EV220B 32: a 1 1/4 in water valve with 18 m3/h flow

The 032U7132 is the 32 mm orifice EV220B in a G 1 1/4 brass body. With a Kv of 18 m3/h (Cv 20.8) it moves roughly four and a half times the water of the 1/2 in version, which suits cooling-tower make-up, process water feeds and larger brine circuits.

It is a normally closed, 2/2-way servo-operated valve. The working pressure is rated to 12 bar and the test pressure to 18 bar, a little lower than the smaller sizes because of the larger diaphragm area. The minimum differential pressure is 0.3 bar.

Larger bore, longer valve action

The estimated opening time on water is 1000 ms and the closing time 2500 ms, much slower than the 40 ms and 350 ms of the 15 mm size. This is a benefit for pipe stress, since it softens the closing surge, but it matters when the valve is used for batching: the delivered volume continues after the coil switches off.

Body, seats and seals: brass with EPDM, medium -30 to 120 C and viscosity up to 50 cSt. With a Kv of 18 m3/h you can estimate the pressure drop of the open valve as (Q / Kv) squared in bar for water, which is derived and only a first estimate; read the curves in the data sheet.

Installation, coil and ordering

Allow room above the actuator for the coil to be pulled off and keep the arrow on the body aligned with flow. A strainer of 50 mesh or finer upstream protects the pilot channel. The coil is ordered separately and the valve is rated for ambient temperatures up to 80 C.

A typical Oman application is make-up water for evaporative coolers, where the supply may contain scale and sand. A fine strainer and a regular inspection of the valve internals are cheaper than an unplanned stop. The valve is serviceable according to the store entry, and spare parts are separate items, so keep a repair kit with the pump station spares and note the code on the maintenance plan.

Remember to specify the coil together with the valve, since the pilot actuator is common to the whole 15 to 50 range, and a coil that is too hot or at the wrong voltage is the main cause of early failures.

About brand

From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them.
