Danfoss VLT Soft Starter MCD 600, 20 to 1250 A

Description

A soft starter that covers 20 A to 1250 A fixed-speed motors

The Danfoss VLT Soft Starter MCD 600 is a soft starter for fixed-speed pumps, fans, compressors and conveyors. A single product family spans 20 to 1250 A full-load current on supplies up to 690 V AC, with a four-line graphical display, built-in timers, an extended simulation mode and communication cards for the main Ethernet and serial fieldbuses.

A built-in bypass contactor in every size is the main route to low losses and low harmonics at full speed. Heat dissipation during run is only about 35 W for the smallest frame and up to roughly 180 W for the largest in the Danfoss data, which keeps cabinet cooling small.

Start, stop and protection functions

Adaptive Acceleration Control offers early, constant and late profiles for the motor speed ramp, while constant current and current ramp with kickstart are available for conventional starts. DC injection braking and soft stop help with high-inertia loads. The Pump Clean (deragging) function gives more uptime and longer pump life; Power Through and emergency mode keep the motor running past a failed component for as long as possible.

Reverse control is available, with starting current and protection kept under control, when a reversing contactor is installed in the application. Simulation mode lets commissioning engineers test the starter without mains or a motor, and the built-in clock supports auto start and stop. The Danfoss fact sheet also lists support for eight languages.

Frame sizes and ordering guidance

Select the frame by motor full-load current, supply voltage (T5 or T7) and the bypass arrangement: integrated bypass for most installations, no bypass for the larger S2 and S3 sizes where an external contactor is preferred, and external bypass on S3. Control voltage is chosen from CV1 (24 V) or CV2 (110-120 V or 220-240 V). The Danfoss data lists dimensions and weights per frame as in the table below.

Frame Current rating Weight (kg) H x W x D (mm)
S1 21, 34, 42 A 4.8 336 x 152 x 231
S1 63, 69 A 4.9 336 x 152 x 231
S1 86, 108, 129 A 5.5 336 x 152 x 231
S2 144 to 244 A 12.7 495 x 216 x 243
S2 287 to 410 A 15.5 523 x 216 x 243
S2 527, 579 A 19 523 x 216 x 243
S3 654, 736 A 51 618 x 447 x 310
S3 950 to 1250 A 62 to 65 618 x 447 x 310

Confirm before ordering: motor current and duty class, supply voltage, bypass type, control voltage, fieldbus card, enclosure and ambient above 40 C (derating). For variable speed instead of fixed speed, see the Danfoss FC 102 drive; other soft starters are listed in the motor soft starters category, for example the Altistart 48.

About brand

From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them.

Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Among the VLT drives listed, three are each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
