Danfoss VACON NXP Air Cooled AC Drive

Description

Overview

The Danfoss VACON NXP air-cooled AC drive is the high-performance member of the VACON® NX family, designed for demanding applications with a focus on higher power sizes and system drives. Danfoss offers it for 208–240 V from 0.55 to 90 kW, for 380–500 V from 1.5 to 1,200 kW and for 525–690 V from 2 to 2,000 kW, with paralleling through DriveSynch extending the range to several megawatts. The Danfoss VACON NXP controls both induction and permanent magnet motors and is widely used where precise torque control, heavy overloads or complex system logic are required.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Danfoss VACON NXP to oil and gas operators, utilities, marine and heavy industry customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We assist with frame selection, option boards and replacement of installed NXP units, many of which have run for years in the region’s plants.

Operating Principle

The Danfoss VACON NXP converts the fixed mains supply into a variable voltage and frequency output for the motor, from 0 to 320 Hz in the standard version. Unlike simpler drives, the NXP control unit offers U/f control, open loop sensorless vector control and closed loop vector control with encoder feedback, which allows full torque at zero speed for hoists, winches and winders. Acceleration and deceleration times are adjustable from 0.1 to 3,000 s, and DC braking provides about 30 % of nominal torque without an external brake option.

Two load ratings are defined. At low overload (IL) the drive delivers its continuous current at up to 40 °C ambient with 110 % overload for 1 minute in 10; at high overload (IH) it is rated for 150 % for 1 minute in 10 at up to 50 °C, and a starting current is available for 2 s in every 20 s. This dual rating lets engineers size the Danfoss VACON NXP economically for pumps and fans, or conservatively for cranes, extruders and other constant-torque machines.

Engineering Design of the Danfoss VACON NXP

The Danfoss VACON NXP is built as wall-mounted units in frames FR4 to FR9, standalone enclosed units in FR10 to FR11, and IP00 modules for cabinet integration. IP21 / UL Type 1 is standard across the wall-mounted and standalone range, with IP54 / UL Type 12 available for FR4–FR9 and FR10 standalone units. Coated circuit boards protect against dust and moisture, DC cooling fans comply with the ErP2015 directive, and the design is classified to IEC 60721-3-3 class 3C3 for chemical vapours and 3S2 for particles.

The control unit has five built-in expansion slots for I/O, fieldbus and functional safety boards, giving the Danfoss VACON NXP its reputation for flexibility in system drives. Fieldbus options and the VACON programming tools allow application-specific software, and the NXP supports gearless drives and parallel connection of power units for very large motors. Full load capacity is available up to 1,000 m altitude, with 1 % derating per 100 m above that.

Key Features

Engineers specify the Danfoss VACON NXP for the following reasons:

  • Open loop and closed loop vector control give precise speed and torque, including full torque at standstill with encoder feedback.
  • A very wide power range from 0.55 kW to 2,000 kW in one platform, with DriveSynch paralleling for higher outputs.
  • Dual IL / IH ratings with 150 % overload at up to 50 °C ambient for constant-torque duty.
  • Five expansion slots for I/O, fieldbus and functional safety option boards.
  • Control of induction and permanent magnet motors, including gearless drive applications.
  • Coated PCBs and IEC 60721-3-3 class 3C3 / 3S2 design for harsh industrial air quality.
  • IP21 standard and IP54 optional enclosures, plus IP00 modules for cabinet builders.
  • DC fans compliant with ErP2015 reduce auxiliary energy use.

Industrial Applications

Danfoss lists cranes, hoists, winches, elevators and escalators, cargo pumps, pumps, fans, conveyors, machine tools, oil pumps, winders, pulp dryers, tissue machines and extruders among the applications of the Danfoss VACON NXP. In the GCC that typically means oil transfer and cargo pumps at terminals, water injection and booster pumps, large cooling and process fans in power and desalination plants, conveyors in cement and mining, offshore and port cranes in Duqm, Sohar and Salalah, and drilling and marine winches. Lifting duties often pair the drive with hoists such as the Konecranes CXT wire rope hoist.

For general-purpose and HVAC duty below the NXP’s focus, Danfoss customers in the region often choose the Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 or the Danfoss VLT HVAC Drive FC 102. The Danfoss VACON NXP is the choice when application software, closed loop control or very high power is needed. Seven Star LLC supplies NXP drives, option boards and spare units across Oman and the GCC.

About brand
From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them. Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Three VLT drives are listed, each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
