The 042N0840 is the Danfoss solenoid coil type AM230C for 230 V AC supplies, supplied as a multi pack. Danfoss lists the part-programme valves as EV210A, EV220A and EV310A, solenoid valves for fluid control. The coil has a DIN spade connection and fastens to a 9 mm actuator size with a finger screw. It is a spare part: the coil is replaced when a valve fails to open, the winding is burnt out or a coil has been fitted with the wrong voltage.

Pack size matters. The Danfoss store lists 042N0840 as a multi pack with 24 pieces per packing format, so a price quoted for this code relates to the pack, and we will confirm the unit basis in the quotation.

Matching a coil to the valve

Always take the voltage and frequency from the old coil label: an AC coil on a DC supply, or the wrong voltage, will overheat or fail to pull in. The data sheet notes the higher cut-in power of AC coils, so the supply must tolerate the inrush when several valves are energised together. Fit the finger screw snugly, keep the cable plug (042N1256) for outdoor or washdown places where IP65 is needed, and replace the coil only with the valve de-energised and depressurised.

How the 042N0840 AM230C coil works

A solenoid coil turns electrical energy into the magnetic force that lifts the armature of a solenoid valve. When 230 V AC is applied to the 042N0840, the magnetic field pulls the armature into the armature tube and the valve changes state; when the supply is removed, the spring returns it. Because the coil only slides over the armature tube of the valve, it can be replaced without opening the pipework or draining the system. This is why Danfoss sells valves and coils separately: one valve body can be fitted with a coil for any of the supply voltages in the AM range.

AC coils draw a higher current at the moment of switching than when holding. Danfoss gives an inrush (cut-in) power of 22.5 VA for the AM AC coils, against 18 VA holding at 50 Hz, so the control transformer or relay contacts must be sized for the inrush when several valves switch together.

• Read the old coil label. Danfoss coil labels show the type, code number, ambient temperature range, voltage, frequency, power in W/VA and the raw coil number. Match the voltage and frequency exactly.
• Confirm the valve. The coil must suit the valve it is fitted to; the AM coil range is used on the EV210A, EV220A and EV310A valves named in the Danfoss documentation.
• Choose the protection level. The spade-only coil is IP00. Order the cable plug 042N1256 where IP65 protection is needed.
• Pack quantity. 042N0840 is a multi pack; confirm the number of pieces you need when you request a quote.
• Other voltages. For 24 V AC use 042N0842, 110 V AC 042N0845, 240 V AC 042N0841, 12 V DC 042N0848 and 24 V DC 042N0843.

Installation & maintenance

Switch off and lock out the supply before working on the coil. Slide the coil over the armature tube and fasten it with the finger screw; never energise a coil that is not mounted on its valve, because the coil relies on the magnetic circuit of the valve. Fit the cable plug with its gasket correctly seated to achieve the IP rating, and route the cable so that water cannot run into the plug.

When a valve does not operate, measure the supply voltage at the plug before replacing the coil. A coil that is discoloured or smells burnt has usually been fed with the wrong voltage or operated without its armature tube. Keep a spare coil of the correct voltage for critical services.
