EVR 32: a cast-iron servo-piston solenoid valve for large refrigerant lines

Danfoss 032L1104 is an EVR 32 normally closed solenoid valve with 1 5/8 in ODF connections. Unlike the smaller brass EVR 10 and EVR 20, the body is cast iron and the valve uses a servo piston instead of a diaphragm. The orifice is 22.23 mm, the Kv value is 16.7 m3/h and the net weight is 4.42 kg.

The maximum working pressure is 45.2 bar (655 psig), the medium range is -40 to 105 C and the ambient limit -40 to 80 C. The minimum opening differential is 0.2 bar (2.9 psi), higher than for the diaphragm types, and MaxOPD is 38 bar with a 10 W AC coil, 31 bar with a BJ/BX coil and 17 bar with a 20 W DC coil.

Servo-piston construction and its consequences

A piston valve tolerates dirty lines and large flows better than a diaphragm design, which suits discharge, liquid and suction lines on bigger commercial and light industrial plants. The price for this robustness is the 0.2 bar minimum differential: the valve needs that pressure difference to hold open, so check this in suction lines.

With an inlet of 1 5/8 in the valve is for line sizes of that class; the orifice and Kv value tell the engineer that this valve passes roughly eight times the flow of the EVR 10. Capacity tables for liquid, hot gas and suction are in the EVR 2 – EVR 40 data sheet.

Mounting and ordering checks

Support the pipe and the weight of the 4.4 kg valve; do not let the coil carry any load. Fit with the coil vertical or up to 90 degrees from vertical, and keep the piston area clean with an upstream filter. Brazing on the cast iron body needs a low-heat procedure.

Choosing Danfoss products

For solenoid valves, check the operating principle. A direct-operated valve such as EV210B opens even at 0 bar differential pressure. A servo-operated valve such as EV220B needs a minimum differential (typically about 0.3 bar) to open, while an assisted-lift valve such as EV250B works from 0 bar. Coils are ordered separately, so the voltage on the coil (for example 230 V AC or 24 V DC) must match the control circuit. For drives, the VLT family is split by application: FC 51 Micro Drive for small machines, FC 102 HVAC Drive for fans and pumps in buildings, FC 202 AQUA Drive for water, and FC 302 AutomationDrive for demanding industrial duty.
