AUMA GST 40.1 sits at the top of the GST spur gearbox family with a valve torque of up to 16,000 Nm and a modulating torque of 5,600 Nm, the highest modulating rating in the GST family. Working Principle of the AUMA GST 40.1

The AUMA GST 40.1 is a double-stage spur gearbox in which two pairs of spur gears step the rotation down from the input shaft to the output drive sleeve while keeping the axes parallel. The design suits motor operation with an electric multi-turn actuator at a maximum input speed of 240 rpm and also manual operation through a 500 mm handwheel. In open-close duty the gearbox is rated for short-time duty S2-15 minutes, and for modulating duty it is rated for intermittent duty S4-25 percent at the 5,600 Nm modulating torque.

The ratio variants show a wide spread of valve torque and input torque. The 8:1 special ratio (factor 7.2) is rated for 11,500 Nm and needs 1,600 Nm at the input, the 11:1 ratio (factor 9.9) delivers the full 16,000 Nm with 1,616 Nm, the 11:1 special ratio is rated for 10,900 Nm with 1,100 Nm, the 14.33:1 special ratio (factor 12.9) for 12,900 Nm with 1,000 Nm, the 16:1 ratio (factor 14.4) for 16,000 Nm with 1,111 Nm and the 22:1 ratio (factor 19.8) for 16,000 Nm with 808 Nm. The average output torque for ATEX open-close duty is 8,000 Nm.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GST 40.1

Valve attachment is F40 according to EN ISO 5210 (G7 according to DIN 3210), and the output drive types A, B1, B2, B3 and B4 as well as the special attachments are available. Input shafts are 50 mm for the 8:1 and 11:1 ratios and 40 mm for the others, with a 50 mm option on the 16:1 and 22:1 ratios. Mounting flanges F16, F25 and F14 allow SA 16.2 and SA 25.1 actuators on the large ratios and an SA 14.6 on the 16:1 ratio, with permissible actuator weights of 80, 160 and 300 kg.

The housing is protected to IP68 and KS, and the standard temperature range is -40 to +80 degrees Celsius with -60 to +60 and 0 to +120 degree options. Output drives can carry a stem nut and a stem protection tube for rising stems, and the gearbox is also available with a second input shaft end and protective cap. Lifting equipment is required for installation because of the 255 kg weight.

Industrial Applications

Large gate valves on bulk water transmission lines, big globe valves in power-plant feedwater systems and isolation valves on pumping-station headers need the torque range of the AUMA GST 40.1. Because it is one of the few multi-turn gearboxes rated for modulating torque in the thousands of Nm, it is also used on large regulating valves where a mid-size SAR actuator and a high-ratio GST give a stable, repeatable position. Oman’s desalination plants and combined power and water facilities are the main customers for this class.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox.
