AUMA GS 160.3 Part-Turn Worm Gearbox (14,000 Nm)
Description
Overview
AUMA GS 160.3 is the point in the GS series where the quarter-turn gearbox becomes a heavy piece of equipment: 14,000 Nm of valve torque in open-close duty, a 100 mm output shaft capacity and a housing that weighs 80 to 91 kg. It is the size specified for big butterfly valves on trunk water mains, large ball valves on pipeline stations and dampers in power-plant ducting, where an engineer needs far more than the 4,000 Nm of a GS 100.3 but not yet the 28,000 Nm of a GS 200.3. Its four ratios, 54:1, 218:1, 442:1 and 880:1, span an unusually wide range of operating times, from 8 seconds to 61 seconds for a quarter turn.
Seven Star LLC is the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, and we supply the AUMA GS 160.3 to power, water and oil and gas customers throughout the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. A gearbox of this size is almost always part of a complete valve automation package, so our engineers help with the extension flange selection, the actuator pairing and the handover documentation rather than shipping the casting alone.
Working Principle of the AUMA GS 160.3
The AUMA GS 160.3 drives a worm wheel from a worm shaft in a cast iron housing, with a spigot machined directly into the housing from this size upward and a plane-machined face available as an option. The worm wheel turns the valve shaft through a splined coupling, and the swing angle is adjustable between 80 and 100 degrees as standard, set to 92 degrees in the factory unless ordered otherwise. Optional ranges step from 0 to 190 degrees, with angles above 190 degrees only possible with a bronze worm wheel and without end stops.
The ratio table shows how steeply the input torque falls as the ratio climbs: a 14,000 Nm valve needs 667 Nm at the input shaft on the 54:1 ratio, 184 Nm at 218:1, 90 Nm at 442:1 and only 51 Nm at 880:1. The conversion factors are 21.0, 76.0, 155 and 276, and the turns for a 90-degree swing are 13.5, 54.5, 110.5 and 220. The three high ratios are built with primary reduction or planetary gearing and weigh 91 kg against 80 kg for the direct 54:1 ratio, and the end stops are guaranteed to 3,200, 900, 450 and 250 Nm respectively.
Engineering Design of the AUMA GS 160.3
Valve flanges F25, F30 and F35 to EN ISO 5211 are supported, with the F35 variant mounted via an extension flange that is screwed and doweled to the housing and adds 33 kg. The input shaft is 30 mm for the 54:1 ratio, 30 mm or 20 mm for 218:1 and 20 mm for the two highest ratios, with input mounting flanges F16 (F14), F14 (F10) and F10. That gives a choice of SA 14.2 to SA 16.2 actuators on the lowest ratio and an SA 10.2 on the highest.
The housing is cast iron with a spheroidal cast iron worm wheel, protected to IP68 and KS corrosion class, and it operates from -40 to +80 degrees Celsius in standard form. Lifetime is 2,500 cycles at maximum torque in duty class 1 and 1,000 cycles in duty class 2, where the permissible valve torque rises to 17,500 Nm for infrequently operated valves. The explosion-protected version carries a mean output torque of 8,000 Nm for three OPEN-CLOSE-OPEN cycles.

- Lifetime of 2,500 cycles at maximum torque in duty class 1, with IP68 and KS protection as standard.
Industrial Applications
Trunk water mains, raw-water intake pumping stations and large power-station cooling circuits use valves whose seating torque lands in the 8,000 to 14,000 Nm range, and the AUMA GS 160.3 is the gearbox that AUMA sizes for them. In the Sultanate of Oman that means butterfly valves at desalination outfalls, cooling water isolation at gas-fired plants and large ball valves on pipeline pumping stations, where the 54:1 ratio gives a closing time of eight seconds when surge control demands it and the 442:1 or 880:1 ratio lets a modest actuator move a very large valve slowly to limit water hammer.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GS 160.3 with SA multi-turn actuators, handwheels and controls to utilities, EPC contractors and plant operators across Oman and the GCC, including customers in the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.Ordering AUMA actuators and parts: what we need

Frequently Asked Questions
In duty class 1 motor operation the AUMA GS 160.3 is rated for 14,000 Nm. Duty classes 2 and 3 for infrequently operated valves and manual operation allow 17,500 Nm.
Choose a higher ratio. A full-load valve needs 667 Nm of input torque at 54:1 but only 184 Nm at 218:1, 90 Nm at 442:1 and 51 Nm at 880:1, at the cost of longer operating times.
AUMA specifies 80 kg for the 54:1 ratio and 91 kg for the three higher ratios, including the unfinished coupling and grease. An F35 extension flange adds 33 kg.
The fastest operating times are 8 seconds at 54:1, 15 seconds at 218:1, 31 seconds at 442:1 and 61 seconds at 880:1 using the maximum permissible input speed.
