AUMA GP 16.1 Planetary Gearbox (700 Nm)

Description

Overview

AUMA GP 16.1 is the third size of the GP planetary gearbox family and the first to use the heavier 19.5 kg housing. It is a coaxial design, which means the input shaft and the valve stem share one axis, so the actuator or handwheel sits directly above the valve instead of beside it. With 700 Nm of maximum valve torque, an F16 flange and a 40 mm bore, it adds torque multiplication of 4:1 or 8:1 to gate valves and globe valves that need a little more than a direct-mounted actuator can provide.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GP 16.1 to industrial and utility customers across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC.

Planetary Working Principle of the AUMA GP 16.1

The AUMA GP 16.1 uses a planetary gear train: a sun gear driven by the input shaft turns planet gears that run inside a fixed ring gear and carry the output. Because load is shared across several planets, the gearbox is compact for its torque rating, and because the input and output rotate about the same axis it can be bolted in line with the valve stem. Clockwise rotation at the input shaft gives clockwise rotation at the output, and the unit can be mounted in any position.

The 4:1 ratio has a conversion factor of 3.6 and needs 194 Nm at a 30 mm input shaft to deliver 700 Nm, while the 8:1 ratio has a factor of 7.2 and needs only 97 Nm at a 20 mm input shaft. That difference decides the actuator: the 4:1 ratio accepts an SA 14.2 through an F14 flange, while the 8:1 ratio accepts the smaller SA 10.2 through an F10 flange. Both ratios weigh 19.5 kg, and for manual duty AUMA lists a 500, 630 or 800 mm handwheel for the 4:1 ratio and 250, 315 or 400 mm for the 8:1 ratio.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GP 16.1

The valve attachment is type B3 according to EN ISO 5210, a bore with parallel keyway, on an F16 flange with a 40 mm shaft diameter. The input shaft carries a metallic surface protection and a cylindrical shape with a parallel key to DIN 6885-1, and the input mounting flange takes the multi-turn actuator directly with no spacer.

The gearbox is rated IP68-8 as standard (8 m head of water) with IP68-20 as an option, KN corrosion protection with KS and KX options, and a standard ambient range of -60 to +80 degrees Celsius, extendable to 0 to +140 degrees Celsius for short periods up to 150 degrees with reduced lifetime. Open-close duty is S2-15 minutes and modulating duty S4-25 percent, and in potentially explosive atmospheres the gearbox is restricted to manual operation with a lifetime of 500 cycles.

Ratio and Handwheel Data of the AUMA GP 16.1

The two ratios of the AUMA GP 16.1 are published as follows in AUMA’s technical data.

Ratio Factor Max. input torque Input shaft Actuator / input flange Handwheel options Weight
4:1 3.6 194 Nm 30 mm SA 14.2 / F14 500, 630, 800 mm 19.5 kg
8:1 7.2 97 Nm 20 mm SA 10.2 / F10 250, 315, 400 mm 19.5 kg

Both ratios share the 700 Nm valve torque, the F16 flange and the B3 bore output.

Where the AUMA GP 16.1 Sits in the GP Range

AUMA’s GP 10.1 to GP 30.1 data sheet lists five sizes, and the AUMA GP 16.1 is the middle one. The series starts at 100 Nm with the GP 10.1 (F10 flange, 20 mm shaft, 6.0 kg), moves to 400 Nm with the GP 14.1 (F14, 30 mm, 6.0 kg), reaches 700 Nm with this size (F16, 40 mm, 19.5 kg), then climbs to 1,200 Nm with the GP 25.1 (F25, 50 mm, 55 to 65 kg) and 2,500 Nm with the GP 30.1 (F30, 60 mm, 63.5 to 75.5 kg). The step from 6.0 kg to 19.5 kg shows where the planetary stage grows to carry 700 Nm, and the GP 16.1 is also the first size to offer an 8:1 ratio.

For a buyer, the practical consequence is the actuator pairing. The GP 14.1 at 4:1 takes an SA 10.2, the GP 16.1 at 4:1 takes an SA 14.2, and the GP 25.1 at 4:1 moves up to an SA 14.6, so each size step is also a step in actuator frame. Valves that sit between 400 and 700 Nm therefore fall to the GP 16.1 even if the stem is only 30 mm, and the F16 flange and 40 mm bore should be confirmed against the valve drawing before ordering.

Key Features

The AUMA GP 16.1 is a compact in-line torque multiplier for medium multi-turn valves:

  • Coaxial planetary gearing keeps input and output on one axis, so the actuator sits directly over the valve stem.
  • A 700 Nm valve torque is reached with a 4:1 or 8:1 reduction, with factors of 3.6 and 7.2.
  • The 8:1 ratio needs only 97 Nm, so an SA 10.2 can operate a valve that would otherwise require an SA 14.2.
  • A B3 bore with keyway on an F16 flange takes a 40 mm stem.
  • The 19.5 kg housing is identical for both ratios.
  • Handwheels run from 500 to 800 mm on the 4:1 ratio and from 250 to 400 mm on the 8:1 ratio.
  • IP68-8 protection comes with KN coating, and KS or KX options suit salty air.
  • The ATEX version, II 2G Ex h IIC T4 Gb, is restricted to manual operation with a 500-cycle life.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA GP 16.1 suits gate valves and globe valves in the middle torque range where the stem axis must stay in line with the actuator. Typical cases are cooling-water isolation valves, boiler house stop valves and process line isolation valves in plants around Sohar, where the actuator cannot be offset sideways. Choosing the 8:1 ratio lets a smaller SA 10.2 operate a valve that would otherwise need an SA 14.2, which can help standardise spare parts across a site.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GP 16.1 with SA actuators, handwheels and controls to EPC contractors, utilities and plant operators throughout Oman and the GCC, including the Salalah economic zone. About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
