ABB MT5200 Guided Wave Radar Level Transmitter

Description

Overview

The ABB MT5200 is a guided wave radar level transmitter for continuous level and interface measurement in liquids, slurries and powders. The transmitter sends a low-energy microwave pulse down a probe (coaxial, single rod or flexible cable) and measures the time of flight of the reflection from the product surface, providing level measurement that is unaffected by changes in temperature, pressure, density or dielectric constant of the medium. Measurement ranges extend to 217 ft (66 m) with accuracy of +/- 3 mm on coaxial probes or in stilling wells, and the MT5200 also measures liquid-liquid interface level and supports ULD (Ultra Low Dielectric) mode down to 1.3 dielectric constant.

Operating Principle

Because the microwave pulse travels down a physical guide – a coaxial tube, a single rigid rod, or a flexible cable – rather than radiating freely through open air the way a non-contact radar does, the MT5200 concentrates nearly all of its signal energy at the product surface and returns a strong, unambiguous echo even in turbulent, foaming, vapor-laden, or low-dielectric conditions that would confuse a non-contact radar or an ultrasonic level transmitter. The time-of-flight principle is inherently independent of the medium’s temperature, pressure, density, and dielectric constant, so a single calibration remains valid even as process conditions change during normal plant operation.

Seven Star LLC supplies the MT5200 as an authorized ABB partner across Oman and the GCC, selecting the probe type – coaxial for the highest accuracy on clean liquids and small vessels, single rod or flexible cable for taller vessels or where a rigid probe cannot be installed – to match each customer’s actual tank geometry and process medium.

Engineering and Design

The transmitter is available with 4-20 mA HART or FOUNDATION fieldbus (ITK 5.1.0 compliant, with 5 AI and 1 PID block) communication, powered from 13.5 to 36 V DC on the HART loop. Measurement update rate is 2 outputs per second with field-adjustable damping from 0.1 to 36 seconds, and a 20-point linearization table is available for odd-shaped vessels. Alarm output follows NAMUR NE43, jumper-selectable upscale (21 mA) or downscale (3.6 mA).

The dual-compartment enclosure is cast low-copper aluminum with polyester powder coat or 316 stainless steel, rated IP66 / NEMA Type 4X with 1/2 in FNPT electrical connections. Probe and process connection materials include 316/L stainless steel as standard with options for Hastelloy C-276, Monel 400, Titanium and Inconel 625. Process temperature rating is -60 to 400 F (-50 to 204 C) standard and up to 800 F (427 C) with options, with process pressure from full vacuum to 1500 psig at 300 F (103 bar at 38 C), up to 5000 psig (344 bar) with options.

Applications

Level and interface measurement in storage tanks, process vessels, separators, stilling wells and external chambers in oil and gas, refinery, petrochemical, chemical and water applications, including high-temperature and high-pressure services. The Ultra Low Dielectric mode and interface-measurement capability make the MT5200 particularly valuable on crude oil/water separators and desalter vessels across Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah refineries, where a reliable interface reading directly protects downstream equipment from carryover.

As an authorized ABB representative, Seven Star LLC configures the MT5200’s probe material, process connection rating, and communication protocol (HART or FOUNDATION fieldbus) to match each installation’s actual process conditions, rather than shipping a generic default configuration that may not suit high-temperature or high-pressure service.
