Measurement Principle

The VEGA VEGAFLEX 86 operates on the time-domain reflectometry (TDR) principle. High-frequency microwave pulses are coupled onto a cable, rod, or coaxial probe and guided along its length; the pulse reflects off the product surface, and the time from emission to reception is measured and converted directly into level or interface position.

Because the signal travels along a physical probe, the VEGAFLEX 86 operates independently of media properties such as density or dielectric constant, delivering precise and reliable measured values even with buildup, foam generation, and condensation present. In saturated steam applications, a special reference probe ensures density-independent measurement, and the sensor can resolve the interface between two liquids with different dielectric constants, such as oil and water.
