Measurement Principle

The VEGAPULS 69 emits a continuous radar signal through its antenna, frequency-modulated in the form of a sawtooth wave, which is reflected by the medium and received back by the sensor. Operating with a transmission frequency of approximately 80 GHz and an antenna size of 75mm, the sensor achieves an opening angle of only 4°—compared to roughly 10° for a 26 GHz radar sensor with the same antenna size—delivering significantly better signal focusing.

Because of its large dynamic range of 120dB, the VEGAPULS 69 can measure even the smallest reflections, enabling reliable measurement of poorly reflecting media such as plastic powders, fly ash, dry sawdust, and even polystyrene pellets or aerosil applications. The cycle time is below one second with an accuracy of ±5mm, and because an 80 GHz beam reflects almost exclusively from the measured medium (unlike lower-frequency beams that also reflect from fixtures and vessel internals), false echoes are significantly minimized.

Engineering Design of the VEGAPULS 69

The VEGAPULS 69 can be equipped with an encapsulated plastic (PP) antenna or a metal-jacketed lens antenna integrated into the flange, allowing optimum adaptation to different application areas—from small process fittings for tight spaces to large silos or vessels with many internal installations.
