VEGAPULS 69 Radar Level Transmitter

Description

Overview

The VEGAPULS 69 is a radar sensor for continuous level measurement of bulk solids, representing the most modern radar level technology for bulk solids industries. Operating at 79-80 GHz frequency with measurement up to 120m, this sensor is capable of measuring poorly reflecting bulk solids over long ranges, in narrow, or even segmented vessels.

As an authorized supplier of VEGA instrumentation, Seven Star LLC proudly offers the VEGAPULS 69 to building materials, cement, chemical, wastewater management, and recycling facilities across the Sultanate of Oman, Muscat, and the wider GCC. Its non-contact measuring principle ensures high plant availability through wear- and maintenance-free operation, with reliable measurement independent of vapour, dust, and noise.

Measurement Principle

The VEGAPULS 69 emits a continuous radar signal through its antenna, frequency-modulated in the form of a sawtooth wave, which is reflected by the medium and received back by the sensor. Operating with a transmission frequency of approximately 80 GHz and an antenna size of 75mm, the sensor achieves an opening angle of only 4°—compared to roughly 10° for a 26 GHz radar sensor with the same antenna size—delivering significantly better signal focusing.

Because of its large dynamic range of 120dB, the VEGAPULS 69 can measure even the smallest reflections, enabling reliable measurement of poorly reflecting media such as plastic powders, fly ash, dry sawdust, and even polystyrene pellets or aerosil applications. The cycle time is below one second with an accuracy of ±5mm, and because an 80 GHz beam reflects almost exclusively from the measured medium (unlike lower-frequency beams that also reflect from fixtures and vessel internals), false echoes are significantly minimized.

Engineering Design of the VEGAPULS 69

The VEGAPULS 69 can be equipped with an encapsulated plastic (PP) antenna or a metal-jacketed lens antenna integrated into the flange, allowing optimum adaptation to different application areas—from small process fittings for tight spaces to large silos or vessels with many internal installations. The sensor covers process temperatures from -40°C to +200°C and process pressures from -1 to 20 bar, with wetted parts available in 316L stainless steel, PP, or PEEK.

Housing options include plastic, aluminium, and stainless steel (precision cast or electropolished) construction, with protection ratings up to IP66/IP68 (1 bar). Output options span two-wire 4-20mA/HART, four-wire 4-20mA/HART, Profibus PA, Foundation Fieldbus, and Modbus, with adjustment via the PLICSCOM display module, PC-based PACTware/DTM, HART Communicator, or asset management software such as AMS and PDM. An intelligent smartphone app simplifies setup and commissioning, allowing quick and easy alignment of the sensor on its swivelling holder.

Key Features

Frequently Asked Questions

What frequency does the VEGAPULS 69 use and why does it matter?
It operates at 80 GHz, achieving an opening angle of only 4u00b0 compared to about 10u00b0 for 26 GHz sensors, giving much better signal focusing and immunity to reflections from vessel internals.
What is the maximum measuring range of the VEGAPULS 69?
The VEGAPULS 69 can reliably measure up to 120m, even for poorly reflecting bulk materials, thanks to its 120dB dynamic range.
What antenna options are available?
The VEGAPULS 69 can be equipped with an encapsulated plastic (PP) antenna or a metal-jacketed lens antenna integrated into the flange, depending on the application.
Is the VEGAPULS 69 suitable for dusty environments?
Yes. It provides reliable measurement independent of vapour, dust, and noise, making it suitable for fine powders, ash, and other dusty bulk materials.
