ABB AX411 Conductivity Transmitter
Overview
The ABB AX411 is a dual-input conductivity transmitter engineered for accurate, reliable measurement in industrial water, wastewater, and process control applications. It supports two simultaneous conductivity measurements from ABB two-electrode contacting cells, giving plants a single platform for comparative or ratio-based conductivity monitoring rather than requiring two separate transmitters.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB AX411 and the wider AX4 series conductivity transmitter range to water treatment and process facilities across Oman and the GCC, with guidance on sensor pairing and configuration.
Operating Principle
The AX411 accepts signals from two ABB two-electrode conductivity cells and converts each into a stable, temperature-compensated conductivity reading, with selectable compensation curves (including NaCl and HCl/NH3 profiles) correcting for the fact that conductivity shifts with process temperature across a −10°C to 200°C compensation range. Beyond simple readings, the AX411 can calculate derived values such as ratio, difference, percent passage/rejection between the two channels, and inferred pH in ammonia-dosed systems — useful for applications like reverse osmosis membrane performance monitoring.
Engineering Design of the ABB AX411
Housed in an IP65-rated enclosure for wall or pipe mounting, the AX411 delivers accuracy better than ±0.01% of span at low conductivity (0–100 µS/cm) and better than ±1% of reading at high conductivity (10,000 µS/cm). It offers two standard configurable current outputs (4–20 mA, 0–20 mA, or 0–10 mA) and three relay outputs, expandable with an optional board for two additional current outputs and two more relays. Power options include 100–240 VAC or 12–30 VDC, and its dual 5-digit LCD display with a 16-character dot-matrix diagnostic line operates across −20°C to 55°C ambient.

Installation and Maintenance
The AX411’s IP65 enclosure and wide -20°C to 55°C operating range make it suitable for outdoor or unconditioned plant-room installation near the measurement point, reducing cable-run length back to a control room. Its dual 5-digit LCD and 16-character diagnostic line simplify field calibration and troubleshooting without a laptop or separate configuration tool, and the auto-off backlight helps preserve display life in continuously running installations.
Setting Up Two-Channel Measurements
The value of the AX411 is in comparing two points. The result is only as good as the choice of those points and of the cell for each one:
- Place the cells to match the calculation – for percent rejection on a reverse osmosis train, put one cell on the feed and one on the permeate of the same stage, so both see the same water at almost the same time.
- Choose a cell constant per channel – feed and permeate can differ by two orders of magnitude, so the two cells usually need different cell constants. Enter each constant separately.
- Use the same compensation on both channels – ratio and rejection values are distorted if the two channels use different temperature curves.
- Name the channels clearly – label the display, the outputs and the DCS tags so that operators never confuse feed with product.
Commissioning Checklist
- Wire both two-electrode cells and their temperature sensors, keeping cable screens connected as the manual specifies.
- Configure each channel (range, cell constant, compensation), and check each one against a reference before you set up any calculated value.
- Select the calculated variable (ratio, difference, % passage or % rejection, or inferred pH on ammonia-dosed water) and assign it to a current output.
- Assign the relays, for example a low-rejection alarm plus a high-permeate-conductivity alarm, so that one failure mode does not hide the other.
- If you need more outputs than the standard two currents and three relays, specify the option board at order time.
Troubleshooting
- Rejection drops suddenly with no change in the process – check the feed cell first; a fouled feed cell reads low and makes rejection look worse.
- Rejection above what the membrane can achieve – check for a swapped channel assignment or a wrong cell constant.
- Noisy ratio – check for air in the permeate line, where low conductivity makes bubbles more visible.
RO and Water Treatment in Oman and the GCC
Brackish and seawater RO plants are central to water supply in Oman and the GCC, and trends in salt rejection are one of the main indicators for scheduling membrane cleaning. The AX411 lets one instrument report feed, permeate and rejection for each train, which keeps panel space and wiring down on multi-train plants. The same two-channel setup suits the cation and degasser stages of demineralisation plants and condensate monitoring.
