LAR QuickTOCultra Online TOC Analyzer

Description

Overview

The LAR QuickTOCultra is an online TRUE TOC® analyzer built for the most difficult water streams: industrial wastewater, process water, de-icing water and samples with high salt, fat, oil or particle loads. It oxidises the raw sample at 1,200 °C without a catalyst and determines the resulting CO2, delivering a TOC result within about three minutes. LAR, now part of Process Insights, describes it as one of the most reliable TOC measurement systems for rough wastewater applications, because its injection and oxidation technique handles sticky, fatty, salty and high-particle samples that cause trouble for many other analyzers. The LAR QuickTOCultra measures TC, TIC and TOC and can be combined with COD and total bound nitrogen (TNb) detection in the same cabinet.

Seven Star LLC supplies the LAR QuickTOCultra and LAR analyzer spare parts to refineries, petrochemical complexes, utilities and environmental teams in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help customers complete the LAR application questionnaire so the measuring range, housing and options match the actual effluent.

Measurement Principle

The analyzer works on the batch principle. A robotic injection system takes a defined volume of the raw, unfiltered sample and injects it into a ceramic furnace held at 1,200 °C, which LAR describes as the highest combustion temperature available for online TOC. At this temperature every carbon compound in the sample is completely oxidised to CO2, including particulate and hard-to-oxidise organics, and no catalyst is used, so there is no catalyst poisoning by salts or heavy metals and no gradual loss of recovery. A carrier gas sweeps the CO2 to an infrared detector, where it is quantified and converted into a carbon concentration.

The LAR QuickTOCultra offers several measuring modes. In TC-only mode the cycle time is one to two minutes, which suits fast process control and spill detection. In the TOCdiff mode, TC and TIC are measured and TOC is calculated by difference in four to five minutes, while the TOCdirect (NPOC) mode strips inorganic carbon before measurement and completes in four to six minutes. The method complies with DIN EN 1484, ISO 8245, US-EPA 415.1 and ASTM D-5173. Because the oxidation is thermal and catalyst-free, LAR reports no memory effects between samples and salt concentrations up to 30 % NaCl.

Engineering Design of the LAR QuickTOCultra

The analyzer is built into a powder-coated steel cabinet to IP54 as standard, measuring 848 × 1100 × 635 mm and weighing from 115 kg. For corrosive or hazardous locations, the LAR QuickTOCultra can be supplied in a stainless steel IP65 housing, a NEMA 4X version, or a purged Ex p housing for ATEX/IECEx Zone 1 and Zone 2 with T3 or T4 temperature classes. A 10.4" back-lit TFT touchscreen with self-explanatory software and an autostart function is the main operator interface, and the analyzer provides 0/4–20 mA analogue outputs, an RS232 interface, LAN connectivity with optional WLAN and remote control over TCP/IP.

Sample handling is designed so that the raw stream does not have to be filtered. A maintenance-free Flow Sampler acts as a particle separator, an optional homogeniser keeps the sample uniform, and particles below 800 µm can be injected. Inflow and outflow use 4.8, 8 or 12 mm ID tubing. Options include an ambient air preparation unit for carrier gas, a CO2 remover, an oil-in-water configuration, and multi-stream measurement for up to six sample streams, which lets one analyzer watch several effluent points on a site.

Key Features

The LAR QuickTOCultra is designed around reliability on difficult samples:

  • Thermal oxidation at 1,200 °C completely converts all organic carbon in the sample, including particles and refractory compounds.
  • The catalyst-free furnace avoids catalyst poisoning and replacement costs on salty or contaminated water.
  • Salt concentrations of up to 30 % NaCl can be measured, which suits brines and desalination reject streams.
  • Measuring ranges run from 0.1 to 50,000 mg/l TOC, and optional dilution extends this to 500,000 mg/l.
  • Response time is about three minutes, with TC-only cycles of one to two minutes for fast process control.
  • No sample filtration is needed, so the result represents the real total organic load of the stream.
  • Multi-stream operation for up to six streams and combination with COD and TNb reduce the number of analyzers on site.
  • Accuracy and repeatability are each stated as maximum 2 % of full-scale range.

Industrial Applications

Typical duties for the LAR QuickTOCultra include monitoring influent and effluent at wastewater treatment plants, discharge control at industrial outfalls, process water checks for product loss and leaks, oil-in-water measurement, and high-salt streams. In Oman this matches refinery and petrochemical effluent treatment at Sohar and Duqm, produced-water and wastewater plants in oil and gas, fertiliser and chemical plants, and food and beverage factories that must prove compliance with discharge permits. Its salt tolerance is also relevant to seawater desalination and brine streams along the Batinah coast and in Salalah.

Seven Star LLC supplies the LAR QuickTOCultra on request with engineering support in Muscat, so operators can rely on local help with selection, consumables and spare parts. We also stock LAR wear parts used across the QuickTOC range and can advise when the UV-based QuickTOCuv is the more economical choice for cleaner water.

About brand
Online TOC measurement in difficult water is the specialty of LAR Process Analysers, a maker of water and wastewater analysers founded in 1986 and based in Berlin, Germany. Its QuickTOC analyzers are found on effluent, process water and condensate lines. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies LAR spare parts and consumables for operators in Oman who already run these analyzers. Current LAR analyzers are offered under the Process Insights name.

LAR analyzer spare parts listed here

The four listed items are parts for the UV persulfate oxidation analyzer type, the QuickTOCuv: a glass reactor for the UV method (501-40-000106, formerly 501-04-000021), a low-pressure 15 W ozone-free UV emitter (501-40-000159), a five-channel peristaltic pump (501-40-000215) and a gas drying tube for the carrier gas path (501-08-000045). All of them are wear or consumable parts replaced during routine upkeep.

Ordering LAR parts: what we need

Send the LAR part number in the 501-xx-xxxxxx format, and the old number as well if your manual shows one. Add the analyzer type and serial number from the type plate, because the QuickTOCuv, QuickTOCultra and other models use different reactors, pumps and tubing. A photo of the old part and the manual's spare parts page speed up the check. We supply these parts to water, power and petrochemical sites across the GCC.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the LAR QuickTOCultra suitable for difficult wastewater?
It injects the raw sample into a furnace at 1,200 C and oxidises it without a catalyst. This completely converts particles and refractory organics, avoids catalyst poisoning by salts, and allows salty, fatty and particle-rich samples to be measured without filtration.
What measuring ranges and cycle times are available?
The datasheet lists ranges from 0.1 to 50,000 mg/l TOC, extendable to 500,000 mg/l with optional dilution. TC-only cycles take one to two minutes, TOC by difference four to five minutes, and direct NPOC four to six minutes, with a response time of about three minutes.
