ABB Thermal Dispersion Level Switch TX
Description
Overview
The ABB TX level switch is a thermal dispersion device engineered for accurate level detection of liquids and gases in industrial applications. It utilizes thermal dispersion technology, which measures the temperature difference between two sensors to detect the presence or absence of a medium – a fundamentally different physical principle from the capacitance, buoyancy, or magnetic level switches elsewhere in ABB’s level portfolio.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB TX to chemical processing, food and beverage, pharmaceutical, and oil and gas operators across Oman and the wider GCC as part of its range of genuine ABB instrumentation. Every unit is supplied with manufacturer documentation and backed locally with set-point configuration guidance.
Operating Principle
The TX contains two temperature sensors: one continuously heated slightly above process temperature, the other tracking ambient process temperature as a reference. When the medium covers the heated sensor, the improved heat dissipation changes the measured temperature differential, which the switch interprets as the presence of the medium; when the medium recedes, the differential returns to baseline. This principle works equally well for liquids and gases without requiring the medium to have specific electrical or dielectric properties.
Because the switch has no moving parts, it minimizes wear and maintenance needs, and it provides consistent switching output regardless of foam, turbulence, or coating on the sensor surface – conditions that would confound a capacitance or float-based switch relying on a different physical measurement principle.
Engineering Design of the ABB TX
The compact design allows easy installation in tight spaces, while still delivering high-performance level detection even in harsh environments with high temperature, pressure, or vibration. The TX operates efficiently in both horizontal and vertical mounting positions and is ideal for tanks, vessels, and pipelines with configurable set points that adapt seamlessly to various process requirements.
Smart diagnostics and a fast response time ensure accurate measurements in real-time, and the rugged stainless steel construction with IP-rated enclosure makes the TX a long-lasting solution for reliable point-level detection across a broad range of installation environments.

Installation Guidelines for the TX
- Mount the probe so the sensing tip is fully immersed at the switching level you want. For side mounting on a vessel, a slight downward angle helps liquid drain from the tip and avoids false readings.
- Keep the tip away from inlet streams, agitator blades and areas where foam or splashing is common, as these can wet or cool the sensor and give false switching.
- Leave enough clearance to remove the probe for inspection, and use a process connection and gasket that suit the vessel rating and the medium.
- Route the cable through suitable glands and keep it separate from power wiring, following the area classification requirements at your site.
Commissioning and Set-Up
Because thermal dispersion depends on the heat transfer properties of the medium, set up the switch under real process conditions whenever possible. With the tip first dry and then covered, confirm that the switch changes state reliably and adjust the sensitivity or time delay as described in the operating instructions. Check the relay or output action against the alarm or interlock logic in the control system, including the failsafe state on power loss.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Because the switch has no moving parts, maintenance mostly means keeping the sensor tip clean. In viscous, sticky or crystallising media, coating can slow heat transfer and delay switching, so inspect the tip at regular intervals and clean it without scratching the surface. If the switch fails to change state, check for coating, supply voltage and wiring faults first. If it switches too slowly, review the time delay and the process temperature changes, which can affect the reference sensor.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
The ABB TX level switch suits overfill and low-level protection on storage tanks, chemical dosing vessels, separators and sumps. It also works in gas and liquid interface duties where conductive or capacitive methods struggle. It is used in chemical plants, food and beverage production and oil and gas facilities across Oman and the GCC.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
