SOR 2700 Ultrasonic Point Level Switch

Description

An ultrasonic point level switch with no moving parts and no calibration

The SOR 2700 is a single or dual point ultrasonic level switch for the economical detection of clean liquids. A sensor with a gap contains two piezoelectric crystals: one transmits sound across the gap and the other receives it. Sound crosses a liquid-filled gap strongly and an air-filled gap weakly, and the electronics switch a relay on the difference. There is no calibration or set-up; SOR states that maintenance is limited to an annual visual inspection.

A field-selectable failsafe (high or low level), an adjustable time delay of 0 to 30 seconds and a self-test button come standard. Dual-point units can be used as two independent alarm points or together for pump-up or pump-down control logic at no extra cost.

Application limits that decide selection

The catalog is direct about where an ultrasonic switch works. The medium must be a liquid with less than about 5% suspended solids, it must be able to drain from the sensor gap (a liquid too viscous to flow out of the 3/4 in gap will cause false alarms), and fluids of 100 cP or more should not be aerated. It cannot tell two gases apart or a gas from a solid. Within those limits it is a low-cost alternative to float switches for clean hydrocarbons, water, lube oil and coolants, including seal pot service.

Model code and what to confirm

The electronics code runs 2700, housing K1 (integral), power AC or DC, agency 00 or FM, point count 01 or 02 and accessories (BK, GW, HR, PK, RG, RM remote mount, tag plates). The sensor is ordered separately: 371 for single point, 372 for dual, with sensor type U or N, material, insertion length in inches and process connection. Match sensor and electronics approvals to keep the FM listing valid. Confirm the liquid and solids content, viscosity, insertion length, connection, supply voltage, relay rating and whether remote mounting is required.

Documents and quotation

The attached SOR 2700 catalog (Form 2011) holds the specification, ordering trees and sensor data, and the instruction manual (Form 2012) covers installation and setup. Send the sensor type, length, connection and supply for a quotation. See more level instrumentation.

About brand

SOR, headquartered in Lenexa, Kansas, designs and manufactures electronic and mechanical instrumentation for measuring pressure, temperature, level and flow. The company dates its history to 1946 and describes itself as a DwyerOmega brand. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier in Muscat and lists its differential pressure transmitters, pressure switches, level switches and flow switches.

Where SOR instruments are used

The company serves the process industries, with significant experience in oil and gas, petrochemical, chemical and power. Its catalogs cover piston-actuated pressure and vacuum switches, 800 Series and 1800 Series pressure transmitters, float-operated and ultrasonic level switches and vane-operated flow switches, many with hazardous-area approvals and IEC 61508 SIL certification for most models.

Ordering from the catalog

Most models are built from a quick-select model code that specifies housing, range, wetted materials, connection, switch element and accessories. Send the full code or the process data (fluid, pressure, temperature, connection and area classification) and we check the configuration against the SOR catalog before quoting. The 815DT, 1800DP, 1510, 1520, 2700 and 6L pages show how the codes are read.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the SOR 2700 detect level?
Two piezoelectric crystals face each other across a sensor gap; strong received sound means liquid in the gap and weak sound means air, and a relay switches accordingly.
Does it need calibration?
No. SOR states that no calibration or additional set-up is required; it has a field-selectable failsafe, a 0 to 30 s time delay and a self-test button.
Which liquids is it suited to?
Clean liquids with less than about 5% suspended solids that can drain from the gap; viscous aerated fluids of 100 cP or more are outside its limits.
What process limits apply?
-40 to 250 F (-40 to 121 C) and up to 2,000 psig, with flanged connections rated 275 psig (150#) or 720 psig (300#).
What outputs are available?
A 10 A SPDT relay at 250 VAC or 24 VDC per point as standard, with 2 A hermetically sealed or gold-contact relay accessories; dual-point units offer pump up or down logic.
