VEGA VEGASWING 51 Compact Vibrating Level Switch for Liquids

Description

A short-fork vibrating switch for tanks, pipes and pump protection

The VEGASWING 51 is VEGA’s compact vibrating level switch for liquids. A piezo drive makes a 38 mm tuning fork vibrate at its resonance frequency; when the fork is covered by liquid the frequency falls, and the integrated electronics turn the change into a switching command. VEGA says it detects the limit level reliably with millimetre accuracy independent of mounting position and can be used as empty or full detector, approved overfill protection, dry-run protection or pump protection in vessels and pipelines. It needs no setup with medium and has a stainless-steel 316L and PEI housing up to IP67.

Setup, switching point and foam

The switching point is marked by notches in the fork and refers to water with the density switch set to at least 0.7 g/cm³. VEGA’s product information warns that foams of density above 0.45 g/cm³ are detected as product, which is worth checking in washdown or aerated tanks. For adhesive media the fork should protrude into the vessel, so avoid mounting bosses; and the product information adds that surfaces parallel to flow minimise resistance in pipelines.

51 versus 53, 61 and 66

The 51 has no tube extension and the VEGASWING 53 adds a freely selectable extension of 100 to 1000 mm. The plics-based VEGASWING 61 and 63 offer relay and NAMUR outputs and up to +250 °C, and the VEGASWING 66 covers -196 to +450 °C and 160 bar. Choose the 51 when a compact stainless side-wall switch is enough. State the fitting, voltage, output type and fluid density in your RFQ, and confirm approvals such as overfill protection with the manufacturer.

Typical use cases sit in compact skids and pump units: a 51 in the side wall of a day tank detects low level to stop a pump, another near the top provides a high alarm, and a pipeline version in a horizontal run detects the presence of liquid. The short fork needs very little nozzle length, and approvals for overfill protection printed by VEGA should be checked against your local requirement before using the switch as an independent safety device.

Documents and quotation

The official VEGA VEGASWING 51 (contactless electronic switch) specification sheet (34660-EN, version 240826) is attached to this page for download and covers the technical data, dimensions and wiring summarised above. The IO-Link and transistor versions have their own VEGA sheets.

RFQs are welcome with the tag number, medium, process conditions and electrical requirements. About brand

VEGA is a German maker of level and pressure instruments. Bruno Grieshaber founded the company in 1959 in Triberg in the Black Forest, and it has been based in Schiltach since 1975, still family owned as VEGA Grieshaber KG. VEGA is best known for radar level sensors: it introduced the first two-wire radar level sensor in 1997 and the first 80 GHz radar sensor for bulk solids, the VEGAPULS 69, in 2015.

Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing VEGA radar and guided wave radar transmitters, point level switches, pressure transmitters and signal conditioning instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. Sensors are matched from the product code on the type label.

Where VEGA instruments are used

VEGA radar sensors measure level in crude oil and product tanks, separators, chemical reactors, cement and aggregate silos, grain stores and water reservoirs. Compact cable radars are widely used in wastewater pumping stations and flood monitoring. Because 80 GHz radar focuses a narrow beam, it can measure past internal structures in a tank, and it is not affected by the temperature, pressure or vapour above the product, which suits hot Gulf storage tanks.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

The product code on the type label (for example PS64.XXXXXXX) fixes the measuring range, antenna or probe, process connection, electronics and approvals. Send it with the serial number. For a new measurement add the medium and its dielectric constant if known, tank or silo height and internals, process pressure and temperature, process connection, output (4-20 mA HART, PROFIBUS PA, Modbus or IO-Link), and any hazardous-area or overfill protection approval required.
