Brand: Chadwick-Helmuth, Honeywell
Honeywell Chadwick-Helmuth Protractor (Blade Tracking Accessory)
Description
Overview
The Honeywell Chadwick-Helmuth protractor is a measurement accessory used in the rotor blade tracking procedure, helping the maintenance crew measure the blade track position on helicopters. The protractor is part of the Chadwick-Helmuth track and balance accessory set that supports the 8500C and Vibrex analyzers.
The protractor is applied in the blade tracking phase of the balance procedure, where the operator measures the reference angles of the blade positions with the instrument and enters the values into the analyzer. The scale markings follow the Chadwick-Helmuth convention, so the recorded angles match the input format of the analyzer software. The instrument is stored in the analyzer kit with the tracking targets, keeping the complete track and balance set available at the aircraft for every run.
Engineering and Design
During rotor track and balance, the blade track is observed with the tracking target attached to the rotor head or with the stroboscopic method, and the protractor is used to measure the reference angles required for the adjustments. The instrument carries the Chadwick-Helmuth scale markings used in the standard track and balance procedure, so the recorded values match the input format of the analyzer software. The reading is entered into the analyzer together with the vibration data to compute the blade corrections.
The protractor is a precision mechanical instrument. It is typically stored in the analyzer kit with the tracking targets and the other accessories, so the complete track and balance set is available at the aircraft. Having a spare on hand avoids delaying the balance run when the original part is damaged.
In the track and balance procedure the protractor is used together with the tracking target and the stroboscopic reference: the operator measures the reference angles of the blade positions, and the values are entered into the analyzer with the vibration data. The scale markings follow the Chadwick-Helmuth convention, so the recorded angles match the analyzer software input format and no conversion is required. The protractor is stored in the analyzer kit with the tracking targets and adjustment tools, so the complete set is available at the aircraft, and MRO organisations working on several helicopter types can use it with the same analyzer across the fleet. Measured angles are recorded on the balance worksheet and archived with the reports to document each aircraft’s blade adjustment history.

Why Seven Star LLC
Seven Star LLC supplies Chadwick-Helmuth track and balance accessories, including protractors, to helicopter maintenance organisations across Oman and the GCC. Our team can help you match the accessory to your analyzer kit. The blade tracking protractor is used to physically measure blade angle and track deviation as part of a rotor balancing procedure, so its accuracy directly affects the correction a technician applies, and our team can help confirm the correct variant for your rotor system rather than assuming a generic fit across different helicopter types.
For MRO facilities running track and balance procedures across a mixed fleet, we help plan accessory spares around your scheduled maintenance calendar, since a damaged or miscalibrated protractor can introduce measurement error into a procedure that is otherwise being performed correctly. If your facility is unsure whether an existing protractor is still reading accurately, we recommend a comparison check against a known reference before relying on it for a critical balancing procedure, and we are glad to advise on what that check should look like for your specific accessory, so a subtle measurement drift never quietly works its way into an otherwise correct balancing procedure and gets carried forward into the maintenance record as though nothing were wrong at all, undetected until the next real, careful inspection finally catches it weeks or even months later than it should have been caught.

How Rotor Track and Balance Works
Rotor track and balance is the maintenance procedure that keeps helicopter main and tail rotor vibration within limits. Tracking makes sure every blade follows the same path as it rotates; balancing makes sure the rotor’s mass and aerodynamic forces are evenly distributed around the hub. The Chadwick-Helmuth analyzer measures vibration with accelerometers and blade position with an optical tracker or strobe system, and it calculates the corrections required: weights, pitch link adjustments or trim tab changes. Accessories such as the protractor support the mechanical side of the procedure, where angles have to be set or checked by hand on the aircraft.
Good Practice for Track and Balance Accessories
- Use the accessory specified in the analyzer manual and the aircraft maintenance manual for the helicopter type.
- Keep the protractor clean, store it in its case and protect the scale from impact and abrasion.
- Check the instrument before each use for damage to the scale and smooth movement of the arm.
- Record all readings on the track and balance worksheet so that the history of adjustments is available for the next inspection.

About brand
Chadwick-Helmuth is the name behind the rotor track and balance equipment used on helicopters and propeller aircraft: balancers, vibration analyzers and the tracking accessories that go with them. Units carry either Chadwick-Helmuth or Honeywell on the nameplate. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Oman, lists the 8500C and 8500C Plus balancer and analyzer, Vibrex accessories and related parts.
Chadwick-Helmuth equipment listed here
The listings fall into two groups. The first is the instruments themselves: the 8500C rotor track and balance analyzer and the 8500C Plus balancer. A Model 11/11A/11B unit is also listed; reseller literature shows this designation both for a balancer and for the calibrator units used to check Vibrex and Strobex equipment, so the part number must be confirmed. The second is what a maintenance crew needs around them:
- Photocell system for the 8500C
- Printer assembly for the 8500C and Vibrex
- Mounting brackets for the 8500C and Vibrex
- Protractor used as a blade tracking accessory
A balancing kit is assembled per aircraft type, so brackets, cables and sensors are selected for the airframe as well as for the analyzer.
Where the equipment is used
Rotor track and balance is routine maintenance for helicopter operators: measuring vibration at the rotor frequency, checking blade track, and adjusting weights, pitch links or tabs until the readings fall within the maintenance manual limits. Propeller balancing on fixed wing aircraft follows the same principle.
Ordering Chadwick-Helmuth parts: what we need
Send the part number and description from the kit list or the label, the analyzer model (8500C, 8500C Plus, Vibrex or Model 11 series) and its serial number. Name the aircraft type the kit is used on, since brackets and cables are airframe specific. If the part number has been superseded, we ask for the manufacturer's current replacement and show you both numbers before you decide.

Fixed gas and flame detection takes up the largest share of our Honeywell listing: Searchline Excel open path detectors, Sensepoint XCD and XRL point detectors, the XNX transmitter and the FS24X Plus flame detector. Honeywell, which dates from 1906 and is headquartered in Charlotte, USA, also makes SmartLine pressure transmitters and VersaFlow flowmeters for process plants.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier of Honeywell gas detectors, replacement sensors, transmitters and controller parts for sites in Oman and the GCC.
Honeywell product families on this page
Open path infrared detection is represented by the Searchline Excel and the newer Searchline Excel Plus. Point detection includes the Sensepoint XCD in flammable and toxic versions, for example the SPXCDALMG1 hydrogen detector, the Sensepoint XRL and the XNX universal transmitter. The FS24X Plus is a triple infrared flame detector. Replacement cells such as the SR-X2V oxygen sensor and the SR-W-MP75C MICROpeL combustible sensor are also listed. Process instruments include SmartLine STG700 and STG800 gauge pressure transmitters, the STR82D remote seal transmitter and the VersaFlow Coriolis mass flow meter. Recorder consumables such as chart pens are also sourced.
Where Honeywell detectors and transmitters are used
Gas and flame detectors guard wellheads, compressor stations, tank farms, loading bays, process units and utility buildings, and report to the fire and gas system. Open path units watch plant boundaries and long pipe racks. SmartLine transmitters and VersaFlow meters measure pressure and flow in refining, gas processing, chemicals and power.
