Working Principle

The WIKA TR10 measures temperature using a resistance temperature detector (RTD) element, most commonly a Pt100 platinum sensor with a temperature coefficient of 0.00385 Ω/Ω/°C, though Pt1000, Pt10, Cu10, or Ni120 elements are also available depending on configuration. As process temperature changes, the electrical resistance of the platinum element changes in a precise, repeatable, and highly linear relationship, which is measured either directly by a control system or converted to a standardized 4-20 mA or digital signal by an optional transmitter mounted inside the connection head.

This RTD architecture gives the WIKA TR10 its defining accuracy advantage over thermocouples: platinum RTDs offer superior long-term stability and repeatability, particularly important for custody-adjacent process measurement and control loops. A spring-loaded measuring insert ensures positive contact against the base of the thermowell bore, improving thermal response time and measurement consistency, and the interchangeable measuring insert can be removed and replaced for inspection or servicing without removing the entire sensor assembly from the process.

Engineering Design of the WIKA TR10

The RTD sensor can be mounted into a thermowell or directly into the process using a fixed, spring-loaded, or compression fitting, with insertion length matched to the thermowell design for correct thermal contact. Electrical approvals cover explosion-proof hazardous locations, ingress protection, and general-purpose areas, registered through CSA, FM, IECEx, and ATEX, available with or without an attached thermowell (an integral flame path is required when supplied without one). Optional analog or digital transmitters can be fitted directly within the connection head or mounted on the measuring insert’s DIN plate, and material traceability of the conductors, metal sheath, and mineral insulation is available for critical applications.
