Brand:

AUMA SQR 10.2 Modulating Part-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SQR 10.2 is the modulating partner of the SQ 10.2 and covers a tripping torque window of 300 Nm to 600 Nm. At S4 – 25 % duty it can modulate with up to 300 Nm, and with the S4 – 50 % option the modulating limit is 210 Nm with a maximum tripping torque of 420 Nm. This is the size where control valves are large enough to appear on main process lines rather than on skids.

Seven Star LLC is the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, and we supply the AUMA SQR 10.2 to utilities, desalination plants and industrial operators in Oman and the GCC. Our team reviews the control loop requirements with customers in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah so that valve, actuator and controller are specified as one system.

Fitting the Actuator to a Control Valve

Control valves experience their highest torque at the extremes of travel, but the actuator spends most of its life moving through mid-travel under load from flow. The AUMA SQR 10.2 is dimensioned for modulating duty with a 300 Nm limit at S4 – 25 %, so the specifier should check the dynamic torque of the valve against 300 Nm and the seat torque against the tripping range of 300 to 600 Nm. Doing both checks avoids the common mistake of sizing only on the breakaway figure.

Operating times at 50 Hz are 11, 16, 22, 32, 42 and 63 seconds, and there is no 8 s ratio in the modulating version of this frame. The pulse duration is 50 ms for the same direction and the reversal pulse grows from 200 ms to 900 ms as the ratio gets slower. Up to 1,500 starts per hour are permitted, and the drive remains self-locking so line pressure cannot move the valve between corrections.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQR 10.2

The AUMA SQR 10.2 uses the larger SQ housing with an F10 standard flange and F12 option, a coupling for shafts up to 38 mm cylindrical, 30 mm square and 27 mm two-flat, and a 200 mm handwheel with 11 or 15 turns per 90 degrees. The larger handwheel provides easier manual positioning during commissioning than the 160 mm wheel of the two smaller frames.

Weight is about 26 kg, or 31 kg with base and lever. The enclosure is IP68, the coating is KS, and the standard ambient range is -30 °C to +70 °C. In combination with AC actuator controls the unit can log operating data, report torque and position and communicate over fieldbus, and with the optional intermediate position switches it can signal defined valve positions to the plant control system.

Key Features

The AUMA SQR 10.2 combines control-grade duty rating with the mechanical interface of a mid-size frame.

  • A tripping torque of 300 Nm to 600 Nm with up to 300 Nm modulating torque suits mid-size control valves.
  • The S4 – 50 % option gives 210 Nm modulating torque and a 420 Nm maximum tripping torque.
  • Up to 1,500 starts per hour and 50 ms pulse duration enable responsive loops.
  • Reversal pulse durations from 200 ms to 900 ms allow smooth direction changes at all ratios.
  • Six operating times from 11 s to 63 s match typical control valve speeds.
  • F10/F12 flanges and shaft capacity up to 38 mm accommodate common butterfly valve stems.
  • A 200 mm handwheel with 11 or 15 turns gives practical manual positioning.
  • IP68 and KS protection support coastal and desert installations.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQR 10.2

The first question for the AUMA SQR 10.2 is whether the loop truly needs modulating duty. If the valve is only repositioned a few times per day, the open-close SQ 10.2 is cheaper and perfectly adequate. If the controller issues commands every few seconds, the SQR is the right drive, and its 300 Nm modulating rating at S4 – 25 % should be compared with the dynamic torque of the valve under the worst flow condition.

A second question is the controller. AUMA’s AM or AC controls can take a 0/4-20 mA setpoint or a fieldbus telegram. Confirm which one your DCS provides, because it determines which controls version is quoted.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQR 10.2 is the working size for butterfly control valves on cooling-water return lines, pump recirculation valves, filter inlet control and process water headers. In power and desalination plants it positions valves that regulate seawater flow through exchangers. Large building complexes and district cooling plants use it for differential-pressure control around chiller banks, where the loop calls for frequent small moves over many years.

The adjacent modulating frames are the AUMA SQR 07.2 and AUMA SQR 12.2.

Open-close duty is covered by the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range, the AUMA SQV variable-speed part-turn actuator offers adjustable operating time, and the AUMA MATIC AM/AC integral actuator controls provide control options.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
