The JUMO 202710 product group consists of battery-powered handheld meters for analytical measurement in laboratories, industrial and wastewater plants, aquaria and fish farms. Type 202710/20 measures pH, redox potential (ORP), rH and temperature and accepts a standard combination electrode on a BNC socket. Type 202710/30 measures electrolytic conductivity, specific resistivity, TDS, salinity and temperature with a pre-assembled graphite cell with a cell constant of 1.0 per cm. Both have a two-line LC display, MIN/MAX memory, a hold function, adjustable automatic switch-off from 1 minute to 2 hours, and a 9 V block battery supply with battery-condition display.

Choosing and using the meters

The pH meter is delivered without an electrode, so a combination electrode must be selected separately; the datasheet points to the JUMO ecoLine and BlackLine pH electrodes (201005), the redox electrodes (201010) and laboratory single-rod electrodes (201030 and 201035) depending on the application. Temperature compensation can be manual or automatic through a Pt1000 immersion probe. Two probe part numbers are given for the 202710/20: 00453208 for devices up to July 2015 and 00648463 for devices as of August 2015, so check the production date of an existing meter before ordering a spare.

The conductivity meter always displays the conductivity compensated to 25 degC, and its automatic range selection keeps the reading in the best resolution; the function can be switched off. The measuring cell is firmly connected to the device. MIN and MAX values are stored together with the temperature at which they occurred, which helps document excursions during a survey.

Applications and enquiry checklist

Operation is by membrane keypad. The pH version supports automatic or manual 1-, 2- or 3-point calibration with DIN 19266 or technical buffers, and a calibration memory with adjustable intervals from 1 to 365 days that raises a CAL warning once expired. Hold can be triggered by a key press or as auto hold, and the auto-off function can be disabled for continuous measurement. The datasheet notes that the instrument meets the EMC protection requirements of Directive 2004/108/EC and quotes an additional error of under 1 % in that context. The break-proof ABS housing measures 142 x 71 x 26 mm.

Portable meters are suited to spot checks of process water, wastewater basins, laboratory samples and aquaculture tanks. For fixed installations compare the dTRANS pH 02 and dTRANS CR 02 transmitters, and see portable test and measurement for other handheld instruments. Please state whether you need the pH, redox and rH version or the conductivity version, whether a carrying case with calibration solutions is wanted, which electrode will be used and the expected measuring range.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.
