Emerson 475 Field Communicator – HART & FOUNDATION Fieldbus

Description

Overview

The Emerson 475 Field Communicator is a handheld, intrinsically safe communicator for configuring, commissioning and troubleshooting HART and FOUNDATION Fieldbus field devices. It supports HART versions 5, 6 and 7, including WirelessHART devices, and can be licensed for FOUNDATION Fieldbus. It succeeded the 375 Field Communicator and added a colour touchscreen, Bluetooth communication and field diagnostics such as ValveLink Mobile.

Device Descriptions (DDs) and system software are updated on site with the Easy Upgrade Utility, and device configurations can be transferred to a PC or AMS Device Manager. Emerson has marked the 475 as discontinued and now offers the AMS Trex Device Communicator for new purchases. Units, power modules, chargers and lead sets remain in wide use for existing maintenance fleets.

Emerson 475 Field Communicator Model Code and Ordering Options

The 475 is ordered with a string of option codes, and the code decides what a given unit can actually do. After the base model 475, the first letter sets the protocol: H for HART only, F for HART plus FOUNDATION fieldbus. P denotes the rechargeable Li-Ion power module. The next position is 1 when the universal power supply/charger is included, or 9 when it is not. A language letter follows (E English, D German, J Japanese, R Russian, C Chinese, F French, P Portuguese).

Hazardous-area approval is a separate choice: KL gives ATEX, FM, CSA and IECEx intrinsic safety including FISCO where applicable, while NA means no approval, so an NA unit must not be taken into a classified area. U adds the Easy Upgrade option, which allows the owner to load new system software and device descriptions for three years; Emerson requires U whenever fieldbus is specified. GM covers graphics and device configuration management, the latter allowing up to 1000 stored configurations.

Bluetooth is also an ordered, licensed feature: code T includes it and code 9 omits the radio entirely. Optional suffix A adds a spare Li-Ion power module and S adds a protective rubber boot with stand. Emerson gives 475 H P 1 E KL U GMT as an example for a typical HART unit and 475 F P 1 E KL U GMT for HART plus fieldbus. When buying a used or surplus 475, ask for the full model string and licence status rather than relying on the product name alone.

Emerson 475 Hazardous-Area Certification, Battery and Charger Limits

Units ordered with the KL option carry ATEX certificate BVS 09 ATEX E 022 with marking II 2 G (1 GD) Ex ia [ia Ga] [ia Da IIIC] IIC T4 Gb and IECEx certificate IECEx BVS 10.0094, both valid for ambient temperatures from -10 to +50 °C. FM approval covers Class I, Division 1, Groups A, B, C and D and Class I, Zone 0, AEx ia IIC T4 when connected according to control drawing 00475-1130. For HART connections the intrinsically safe input parameters are Ui 30 V DC, Ii 200 mA and Pi 1.0 W, with Li and Ci equal to zero.

The power module contains two Li-Ion cells and is not user serviceable. Emerson states that it must never be recharged in a hazardous area because the power supply/charger is not IS-approved, and that only the Field Communicator charger may be used. Charging is permitted between +10 and +40 °C. With a battery fitted, storage is limited to -20 to +55 °C for less than one month; without a battery the limit is -20 to +60 °C. The charger accepts 100-240 VAC, delivers 20 W and weighs 240 g.

About brand

Flow computers and remote controllers lead the Emerson listing here: the ROC800 series and the FloBoss 107 used for gas and liquid measurement at wellheads, metering skids and pipeline stations. Emerson, founded in 1890 and headquartered in St. Louis, USA, also stands behind Micro Motion Coriolis meters, Fisher FIELDVUE valve controllers and the DeltaV control system.

Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier, sources these Emerson products and their spare parts for users in Oman and the GCC.

Emerson product families on this page

The measurement and control group includes the ROC809 and the expandable ROC827 Remote Operations Controllers, the ROC800L for liquid measurement and the FloBoss 107 Flow Manager. Flow metering is represented by Micro Motion ELITE CMF Coriolis sensors and the 5700 transmitter. For valves there is the DVC6200 digital valve controller, plus solenoid valves and a safety relief valve. DeltaV hardware includes the PK Controller and DeltaV SIS components. Field tools are the AMS Trex Device Communicator and the earlier 475 Field Communicator, and wireless networks use the 1410S gateway with the 781S smart antenna. The cooling items are Copeland scroll and semi-hermetic compressors, which were sold for many years under the Emerson name.

Where Emerson equipment is used

ROC and FloBoss units calculate and log gas and liquid flow at production sites and custody transfer points. Micro Motion meters measure mass flow and density in loading, blending and fiscal metering. DVC6200 controllers position control valves and report valve diagnostics, and DeltaV runs process units in refineries, chemical plants and utilities. Copeland compressors serve air conditioning and refrigeration plants.

Ordering Emerson parts: what we need

Send the full model string and serial number from the nameplate. For ROC800 units list the I/O and communication modules fitted and the application, gas or liquid. For Coriolis meters give both the sensor and the transmitter model. For DeltaV parts quote the 12P or KJ part number, and for compressors the complete model number with voltage code.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the 475 power the loop?
No, the transmitter/loop must be powered. The 475 communicates over the powered loop (or bench-supply).
Can it handle new device revisions?
Only if the unit's DD library already includes the device. Emerson's Easy Upgrade renewals ended on 30 Oct 2020 and the 475 is discontinued.
Is it intrinsically safe?
Versions with hazardous-area approvals exist. Check your unit’s nameplate or send us a photo for verification.
What about FOUNDATION Fieldbus?
The 475 supports FF H1 for parameterization, checks, and basic diagnostics.
