SciAps Z-903 Handheld LIBS Analyzer – Z900 Series
Overview
The SciAps Z-903 is a handheld laser induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) analyzer that measures every element in the periodic table, from hydrogen to uranium, in a single portable instrument. It uses the same high-power laser as the rest of the SciAps Z-900 series but with an extended spectrometer range from 190 nm out to 950 nm. The extended spectral range allows emission lines from elements such as H, F, N, O, Br, Cl, Rb, Cs and S to be measured, lines that cannot be detected with the shorter-range Z-900 series models. This makes the Z-903 the only handheld instrument of its kind for those who need truly broad elemental coverage in the field.
The Z-903 analyzer is applied across exploration for lithium brines and hard rock, geochemistry, NDT, positive material identification, environmental screening and recycling programs where fast elemental identification is required. The instrument is available with the company’s cloud data management software for seamless field data transfer and result sharing.
Engineering and Design
The Z-903 is the world’s only handheld analyzer offering elemental micro-analysis in the field. Users can set the laser raster to a grid pattern, using the 100 micron laser spot size for elemental heat mapping point-by-point across a sample surface. For bulk samples, the analyzer can be set to average results from every raster location to produce a bulk sample result, in the same way a handheld XRF analysis would be performed. The unit carries the same compact, lightweight form factor as the other Z-900 models, which makes it practical for remote exploration sites, mines and industrial plants.
The extended spectrometer range of the Z-903 brings practical measurement benefits beyond simple element coverage. It measures a more sensitive line for lithium near 675 nm, achieving limits of detection in the 2-5 ppm range, and it also measures a more sensitive, interference-free line for potassium that is not affected by the heavy iron interference seen on the traditional potassium lines. The analyzer is built around the proven Z-900 laser architecture, which supplies the pulse energy needed for LIBS analysis at ambient pressure without consumable X-ray sources.
For mineral exploration work the Z-903 provides geochemistry results in the field without sample preparation, and the wide elemental coverage from H to U removes the uncertainties of element-by-element screening. The 190 nm to 950 nm spectral range with high resolution optics allows clear separation of spectral lines even in complex samples. For operators the analyzer offers sampling flexibility: individual spot analyses, raster grids for heat mapping, and bulk averaging modes, all accessible from the on-device software. For fleet users the analyzer supports user roles and data export that fit into quality workflows, and the battery-powered design keeps the unit ready for field work throughout the day.

Choosing the Z-903 Over Other Z-900 Models
All Z-900 series analyzers share the same laser platform, so the choice between models depends mainly on the elements that must be measured. The Z-903 is the right model when the job requires light elements and halogens, such as lithium, fluorine, chlorine, bromine, sulfur, nitrogen or oxygen, or when potassium must be measured in iron-rich material. If the work is limited to routine alloy grade sorting, a shorter-range model may be sufficient. Before ordering, list the target elements, the material types and the expected concentration ranges, so that the configuration and calibrations can be confirmed.
Setup and Field Commissioning
On delivery, charge the batteries, check the instrument self-test, and run the check sample supplied with the analyzer to confirm spectrometer performance. Load or confirm the calibration models needed for the application, set up user accounts and result export, and train operators in laser safety before field use. For geochemistry work, establish a sample preparation routine, since clean, flat surfaces and consistent contact give better repeatability. Checking the analyzer on certified reference materials that resemble your samples is good practice at the start of each campaign.
Care and Troubleshooting
- Keep the analysis window clean and replace it if scratched or damaged.
- If results drift, run the check sample and recalibrate as instructed by the manufacturer.
- Store the unit in its case, away from heat and dust, when not in use.
- Keep batteries charged and rotate them during long field days.
Applications in Oman and the GCC
Oman has active mineral exploration in copper, chromite and other resources, and interest in lithium is growing across the region. The sciaps z-903 supports field screening of drill core and outcrop samples in these programs. In industry, it is used for positive material identification in refineries and fabrication yards, and for sorting scrap in recycling operations in Sohar and other industrial areas.
Seven Star LLC supplies SciAps analyzers and accessories to exploration, inspection and industrial users across the GCC, and helps customers confirm the right configuration for their elements and materials.

SciAps LIBS analyzers: the Z-900 series
A SciAps LIBS analyzer fires a pulsed laser at the sample to create a small plasma, and an on-board spectrometer reads the light it emits. Which elements the unit can report depends on the spectrometer range fitted. The Z-900 series has three models, Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903, and the listed Z-903 is the model in that series ordered for extended element coverage.Ordering a SciAps analyzer: what we need
Tell us the materials you test (carbon steel, stainless, aluminum, nickel alloys, ores) and the elements you must report, since that decides between the Z-901, Z-902 and Z-903 and the calibrations loaded. State whether the work is PMI on site, scrap sorting or geochemistry. For GCC inspection companies, list any client specification the results must satisfy.Browse SciAps products by category: Portable Test & Measurement.
