Hanna HI98193 Waterproof Portable Dissolved Oxygen and BOD Meter
Description
Dissolved oxygen readings with built-in barometer and BOD routines
The HI98193 is a waterproof portable dissolved oxygen meter for wastewater plants, aeration basins, aquaculture, rivers and process water. It reads dissolved oxygen from 0.00 to 50.00 mg/L and from 0.0 to 600.0 % saturation using the HI764073 polarographic probe, which has a protective sleeve, an internal temperature sensor and a 4 m cable in the kit.
A built-in barometer lets the meter compensate automatically for atmospheric pressure, so the operator does not need altitude charts or a separate barometer reading. Manual salinity compensation allows direct determination of dissolved oxygen in saline water. The meter also includes application software for Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD), Oxygen Uptake Rate (OUR) and Specific Oxygen Uptake Rate (SOUR), which suits activated-sludge process control.

Simple calibration and process-control functions
Hanna simplified dissolved oxygen calibration on this meter. The operator can run a one-point or two-point automatic calibration at 100 % saturation (8.26 mg/L) and at the 0 % zero-oxygen point, or enter a known value in mg/L or % saturation for a single manual point. Temperature can be calibrated at one or two points, and a user-selectable calibration time-out reminds staff when a new calibration is due. All readings are temperature compensated automatically between 0.0 and 50.0 °C.
The BOD routine supports incubation testing, while OUR and SOUR measurements help a plant assess how active the biomass in an aeration tank is. Log on demand stores up to 400 samples, Auto Hold freezes the first stable reading, and the GLP feature shows the last calibration data.
Choosing this model, and what ships in the kit
Select the HI98193 when dissolved oxygen is the primary parameter and when BOD, OUR or SOUR calculations are useful. If conductivity or pH must be recorded with the same handheld body, Hanna offers the HI98199 with interchangeable digital probes, and the HI9829 for multi-parameter field logging.
Confirm before ordering that a polarographic probe is acceptable for the application, that the 4 m cable length reaches the sampling point, and that spare PTFE membrane caps and electrolyte will be stocked. Per Hanna, the kit contains the HI764073 DO probe, two preformed PTFE membrane caps, HI7041S electrolyte solution (30 mL), HI7040 zero-oxygen solution, two 100 mL beakers, HI92000 PC software, an HI920015 micro USB cable, four AA batteries, instruction manual, quick start guide, quality certificate and an HI760193 rugged carrying case.
How the Hanna HI98193 works
The probe has a membrane that lets oxygen through to a cell. The oxygen reacts at the cell and makes a small current. The meter reads this current and turns it into a dissolved oxygen value. A temperature sensor in the probe corrects the reading for temperature. The built-in barometer corrects for air pressure, and the operator can enter the salinity for saline water.

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the HI98193
Fit a new membrane cap and fill it with electrolyte as the manual says. Let the probe settle. Calibrate at 100 percent saturation in air and at zero oxygen. Rinse the probe after each use. Store it with the protective sleeve in place and change the batteries when the display warns.
