Phase II portable hardness testing methods
Phase II offers portable testers in several methods; the PHT-3500 is a Leeb tester normally supplied with impact device D. Dynamic impact (Leeb) testers measure the rebound of an impact body and convert the result to Rockwell, Brinell, Vickers and Shore values; impact devices D, DC, DL, D+15, C and G suit different part sizes and hardness levels. Ultrasonic contact impedance (UCI) testers use a vibrating rod with a diamond tip and can test metal as thin as 2 mm.

Which impact device do I need for a Phase II Leeb tester?
Phase II lists device D as the general type, with DC and DL as variants, C with a lower impact energy for small or thin parts, and G with an enlarged tip for rough castings and forgings. Tell us the part weight, thickness and expected hardness and we check the device in the manufacturer's documentation.
When is a UCI tester the better choice than a Leeb tester?
Leeb testing needs enough mass and thickness behind the test point. The UCI method works on metal as thin as 2 mm and on small radii, so it is used on thin sections and small parts.
What should I send for a quotation on the PHT-3500?
Send the model code, quantity, the materials and hardness scales you report in, and any accessories such as a test block, support rings or a spare impact device. If you already own a Phase II tester, send its model and serial number so accessories can be matched.
