Overview

The Dräger Flame 1500 (IR3) flame detector uses its triple IR sensor to detect hydrocarbon fires even at great distances, providing excellent false alarm immunity as approved by FM while maintaining a response time of under 4 seconds. The Flame 1500 is equipped with three infrared sensors that enable it to detect hydrocarbon-based fires even at a great distance, with this reliability allowing it to meet IEC 61508 requirements for safety integrity according to SIL2.

Measurement Principle

The Flame 1500 measures infrared radiation across three different wavelengths (in the 3μm to 8μm range) and compares them with the reference value of CO2, which is produced during the combustion of hydrocarbons. In combination with analysis of the flame’s flickering pattern, a complex algorithm identifies a genuine fire event and excludes common sources of false-alarm interference such as sunlight, welding arcs, and lightning.

The detector achieves detection ranges of 50m (165 ft) for methane fires, 42m (136 ft) for methanol fires, and up to 60m (200 ft) for n-heptane/gasoline fires, with a horizontal and vertical field of view of 90° each. Sensitivity settings of High (60m), Medium (30m, standard), and Low (15m) allow the detector to be tuned to the specific hazard profile and desired coverage area of an installation.

Engineering Design of the Flame 1500

The Flame 1500 is available in powder-coated aluminium (2.5kg/5.5 lbs) or stainless steel (6kg/13.2 lbs) construction with dual M25 cable glands, operating from an 18 to 32VDC supply (24VDC nominal) with a maximum power consumption of 12W with heating enabled (minimum 3W). The detector carries IP66 ingress protection and NEMA 4X classification, with an extreme operating temperature range of -60°C to +85°C (-76°F to +185°F) suitable for both arctic and desert deployments.

Output is provided via a 0 to 20mA analog signal with alarm and fault relay outputs, alongside HART 7 and RS485 digital communication for direct integration with fire alarm and control systems. An Optical Verification Test (OVT) automatically checks the detector’s electronics and optics without obstructing the field of view, while a tri-color front LED indicates device status: green for normal operation, yellow for fault, and red for fire alarm.
