Overview

Measurement and Operating Principle

The FFS08 uses optical radiation detection to continuously verify that a burner flame is present and stable. UV-sensitive variants respond to the ultraviolet radiation characteristic of open flames from natural gas and light fuel oil, while IR-sensitive variants respond to infrared radiation and flicker frequency, suited to fuels and flame types where UV signal strength is weaker. The sensor’s optical signal is transmitted to the F152 evaluation unit, which analyzes signal strength and flicker characteristics against SIL 3 safety logic to distinguish a genuine flame from background radiation, hot refractory glow, or other false-positive sources.

Because the FFS08 operates in continuous mode, it is suited to applications requiring ongoing flame supervision throughout the burner firing cycle, rather than intermittent pilot-only monitoring. The evaluation unit’s SIL 3 safety rating, certified to DIN EN 61508 and DIN EN 298, ensures that a genuine loss-of-flame condition results in a rapid, fail-safe burner trip, protecting against unburned fuel accumulation and potential explosion hazards in the furnace or combustion chamber.
