Dräger Flame 2700 (Multi-IR) Flame Detector

Description

Overview

The Dräger Flame 2700, designated Multi-IR, is a multichannel infrared flame detector that recognises both hydrocarbon fires and hydrogen fires. Hydrogen burns with an almost invisible flame and gives off little of the carbon dioxide emission that ordinary hydrocarbon IR detectors rely on, so a detector that explicitly lists hydrogen sensitivity is valuable for electrolyser, refuelling and chemical sites. Dräger quotes a response of about 5 seconds, with gasoline fires detected out to 65 metres and hydrogen flames out to 38 metres in the sensitivity table, measured on a 0.1 square metre pan fire or a defined plume fire.

Across Oman and the wider GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Dräger Flame 2700 on request, backed by engineers based in Muscat. We help refineries, petrochemical plants, gas processing sites and emerging hydrogen projects choose detector variants, accessories and mounting hardware that fit their layout.

Multichannel IR Detection in the Dräger Flame 2700

Instead of looking at one narrow infrared band, the Dräger Flame 2700 evaluates several channels between 2 and 5 micrometres. This wider spectral window is what lets the detector respond to hydrogen as well as hydrocarbon flames, and cross-checking the channels is how multi-IR detectors in general separate genuine fires from interference. Dräger reports that the 2700 ignores nuisance sources like arc welding and hot CO2 plumes, and its sensitive optics avoid reacting to fires beyond the monitored zone.

Coverage angle depends on the fuel: 80 degrees horizontally and 80 degrees vertically for gasoline, and 70 degrees horizontally with 80 degrees vertically for hydrogen. The sensitivity table also lists ammonia at 18 metres and silane at 2 metres for a smaller plume fire, so engineers working with unusual fuels can check coverage directly in the data sheet.

Construction and Diagnostics

The body is cast in SS316L stainless steel and weighs 2.8 kg. Ingress protection reaches IP66 and IP67 (NEMA 250 6P), and wiring enters through a pair of NPT or metric threaded ports. On the Dräger Flame 2700, a heated window protects the optics against icing and fogging, which matters for cold or humid installations and for sites with large day and night temperature swings.

The detector runs a Built-in-Test routine on its electronics and optics without operator action, and a manual test can be started too. A three-colour LED on the front face reports the state: green means healthy, yellow means a fault, and red means fire. To connect to a plant system, the detector offers HART, an RS-485 Modbus link, stepped current output and relays, powered from 24 V DC.

Key Features

The Dräger Flame 2700 provides these core capabilities:

  • Multi-IR sensing of hydrocarbon and hydrogen-based fires in the 2 to 5 micrometre range.
  • Response in around 5 seconds, with gasoline fires detected to 65 metres.
  • Hydrogen flame detection to 38 metres for a plume fire under the stated test conditions.
  • SIL 2 capability confirmed by a TUEV certificate.
  • Rejection of welding arcs, hot CO2 plumes and similar nuisance sources.
  • A heated viewing window and a self-test that can run automatically or on demand.
  • HART and Modbus over RS-485, a stepped current loop and three relays.
  • Service in ambient temperatures from -55 °C up to +75 °C.

Industrial Applications

Where a plant handles both oil-derived fuels and hydrogen, a single detector family such as the Dräger Flame 2700 reduces design complexity. The Dräger Flame 2700 suits hydrogen production and compression, ammonia and chemical processing, refinery hydrotreating units, gas turbine halls and fuel storage, alongside classic hydrocarbon hazards such as diesel, jet fuel, alcohols, methane and LPG, all of which appear in the published sensitivity data.

Contractors and plant owners from Muscat to the Sohar and Salalah economic zones can rely on Seven Star LLC for layout review, accessory selection and spare parts planning. Because Oman is developing green hydrogen and ammonia projects, the hydrogen capability of the Dräger Flame 2700 is a practical reason to specify it for new facilities, while the same body style serves established oil and gas sites.

About brand
Gas detection is the part of Dräger that plant safety teams meet first: a Polytron transmitter on a pipe rack, an X-am clipped to a coverall, a box of detector tubes in the permit office. The company was founded in Lübeck, Germany, in 1889. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Dräger fixed gas transmitters, flame detectors, portable gas detectors and Dräger-Tubes for sites in Oman, and checks each part number against the manufacturer's documentation.

Dräger gas detection product families listed here

Fixed detection is covered by the Polytron line: the Polytron 8100 EC for toxic gases and oxygen with electrochemical sensors, the Polytron 8200 CAT for flammable gases with a catalytic sensor, the Polytron 7000 and the PIR 7000 point infrared detector for hydrocarbons. Dräger flame detectors on this page are the Flame 1500 and Flame 2500 (triple infrared) and the Flame 2700 (multi-infrared). Portable instruments include the Pac 8000 single-gas detector, the X-am 2500 for one to four gases and the X-am 8000 for up to seven. Short-term colorimetric tubes such as Hydrogen Sulfide 100/a (CH29101) are listed with the analyzer accessories.

Where Dräger detectors are used

Polytron transmitters and PIR 7000 heads are found on wellhead and gathering facilities, gas plants, refineries, tank farms, LNG and petrochemical units, and in water treatment chlorine rooms. Portable Dräger gas detectors serve confined space entry, hot work permits and personal H2S monitoring, which is routine on sour fields in the GCC. Detector tubes remain a simple spot check where an electronic sensor is not available for the gas.

Ordering Dräger equipment: what we need

Dräger identifies most items by a seven-digit part number, such as 8101211, and that number is the most direct route to the right quotation. For a fixed transmitter, add the target gas, measuring range, output (4-20 mA, HART or relays), housing material, cable entry thread and the required hazardous-area approval. For portables, list the sensor configuration, pump or diffusion mode and the charger or calibration accessories needed. For tubes, give the gas and the range printed on the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the Dräger Flame 2700 detect hydrogen fires?
Yes. Unlike a hydrocarbon-only detector, the multichannel IR sensor of the Dräger Flame 2700 covers hydrocarbon and hydrogen-based fires. The sensitivity table lists hydrogen at 38 metres for a defined plume fire, and also gives ranges for ammonia (18 metres) and silane (2 metres).
What is the field of view?
For gasoline fires the field of view is 80 degrees horizontal and 80 degrees vertical. For hydrogen it is 70 degrees horizontal and 80 degrees vertical, so mounting position and aiming should be planned against the fuel that matters most.
How is the detector tested and monitored?
A Built-in-Test checks the electronics and optics automatically and can also be started manually. A tri-colour LED shows green for normal operation, yellow for a fault and red for a fire alarm. A flame simulator FS-1400 (M) is listed for functional testing under simulated fire conditions.
Which order numbers are listed for it?
Dräger lists 6813916, 6813917 and 6813918 (M-111SC, M-211SC, M-311SC) and 6813956 to 6813959 (M-112SF, M-212SF, M-222SF, M-312SF). Please send the full code you need and we will verify it against the data sheet before quoting.
