Dräger Polytron 8100 EC Toxic Gas Transmitter

Description

Overview

The Dräger Polytron 8100 EC is the explosion-proof transmitter Dräger positions at the top of its Polytron line for toxic gas and oxygen detection. It pairs a robust flameproof housing with a plug-and-play electrochemical DrägerSensor that is selected for one specific target gas, so the same transmitter body can be configured for carbon monoxide, hydrogen sulphide, chlorine, ammonia, oxygen and many other substances. Output is a 3-wire 4 to 20 mA analogue signal with optional relays, and HART, Modbus and fieldbus options let it connect to nearly any control system found in a process plant.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC to refineries, gas processing sites, water utilities and chemical plants across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. As a trusted supplier of Dräger gas detection equipment, we supply on request and provide engineering support in Muscat, helping safety engineers match the correct sensor, housing and communication option to each measuring point before an order is placed.

Operating Principle of the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC

The detection element is an electrochemical DrägerSensor. Target gas diffuses into the cell, reacts at the sensing electrode and produces a current proportional to the gas concentration, which the transmitter converts into a reading and a 4 to 20 mA signal. Dräger states that its electrochemical sensors can detect over 100 toxic gases and oxygen, and that they provide continuous detection under harsh conditions across a temperature range of -40 °C to +65 °C.

Each sensor carries a built-in memory that holds its calibration and configuration data. Because of this, every sensor used with the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC ships pre-calibrated and are ready for immediate operation once connected, and a replacement can be fitted without recalibrating from scratch. An intelligent self-test function supports predictive maintenance, and the intrinsically safe sensor connection removes the need for a flame arrestor, which Dräger notes gives faster response times and higher sensitivity.

Engineering Design and Operation

The transmitter housing is an epoxy coated, copper-free aluminium or SS316L stainless steel enclosure with a Class I, Division 1 explosion-proof rating. Dimensions are approximately 280 x 150 x 130 mm, with a weight of about 3.0 kg for aluminium and 5.0 kg for stainless steel. Two 3/4 inch NPT ports or M20 cable glands accept field wiring, and the enclosure carries NEMA 4X and 7 plus IP65/66/67 protection.

Operation of the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC is deliberately simple. A large graphic backlit display shows the measured concentration, the selected gas type and the unit, while green, yellow and red status LEDs signal normal, fault and alarm conditions. Settings are changed with a magnetic wand held over contact surfaces on the glass, so the enclosure never has to be opened in a hazardous area. The same layout is shared by every transmitter in the Polytron 8000 series, which reduces training and maintenance effort when a site mixes toxic, flammable and infrared measuring points.

Key Features

The Dräger Polytron 8100 EC combines sensor intelligence with practical field features, including:

  • Plug-and-play electrochemical DrägerSensors with built-in calibration memory, shipped pre-calibrated for immediate use.
  • Detection of more than 100 toxic gases and oxygen, depending on the sensor fitted.
  • HART, PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 and Modbus RTU digital options alongside the 4 to 20 mA output.
  • Optional integrated relays: two freely adjustable alarm relays and one fault relay for standalone local alarming.
  • A remote EC sensing head that can be installed up to 30 metres from the transmitter in its own intrinsically safe housing.
  • A data logger dongle supplied as standard, which records gas readings and events continuously.
  • Optional sensor test and advanced diagnostic dongles that estimate the remaining sensor service life.
  • SIL 2 certification by TUEV Sued, with ATEX, IECEx, UL, CSA and marine approvals.

Industrial Applications

The Dräger Polytron 8100 EC suits any location where toxic gas or oxygen depletion must be detected continuously and reported to a control room: hydrogen sulphide around sour gas and refinery units, chlorine in water treatment and desalination plants, ammonia in refrigeration, and oxygen monitoring in confined or inerted areas. The wide temperature range of the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC makes it a sensible choice for Oman, where outdoor equipment sees high ambient heat, and the remote sensing head is useful for pits, trenches and elevated points that are awkward to reach.

Seven Star LLC supports facilities in Muscat, the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and elsewhere in the GCC with sensor selection, spare sensor planning and delivery coordination. The same platform covers oil and gas, petrochemical, power, pharmaceutical and food processing sites, so a plant can standardise on the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC and its siblings for many different toxic gas hazards and keep a small, common spare parts pool.

About brand
Gas detection is the part of Dräger that plant safety teams meet first: a Polytron transmitter on a pipe rack, an X-am clipped to a coverall, a box of detector tubes in the permit office. The company was founded in Lübeck, Germany, in 1889. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Dräger fixed gas transmitters, flame detectors, portable gas detectors and Dräger-Tubes for sites in Oman, and checks each part number against the manufacturer's documentation.

Dräger gas detection product families listed here

Fixed detection is covered by the Polytron line: the Polytron 8100 EC for toxic gases and oxygen with electrochemical sensors, the Polytron 8200 CAT for flammable gases with a catalytic sensor, the Polytron 7000 and the PIR 7000 point infrared detector for hydrocarbons. Dräger flame detectors on this page are the Flame 1500 and Flame 2500 (triple infrared) and the Flame 2700 (multi-infrared). Portable instruments include the Pac 8000 single-gas detector, the X-am 2500 for one to four gases and the X-am 8000 for up to seven. Short-term colorimetric tubes such as Hydrogen Sulfide 100/a (CH29101) are listed with the analyzer accessories.

Where Dräger detectors are used

Polytron transmitters and PIR 7000 heads are found on wellhead and gathering facilities, gas plants, refineries, tank farms, LNG and petrochemical units, and in water treatment chlorine rooms. Portable Dräger gas detectors serve confined space entry, hot work permits and personal H2S monitoring, which is routine on sour fields in the GCC. Detector tubes remain a simple spot check where an electronic sensor is not available for the gas.

Ordering Dräger equipment: what we need

Dräger identifies most items by a seven-digit part number, such as 8101211, and that number is the most direct route to the right quotation. For a fixed transmitter, add the target gas, measuring range, output (4-20 mA, HART or relays), housing material, cable entry thread and the required hazardous-area approval. For portables, list the sensor configuration, pump or diffusion mode and the charger or calibration accessories needed. For tubes, give the gas and the range printed on the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which gases can the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC detect?
The Dräger Polytron 8100 EC detects toxic gases and oxygen depending on the DrägerSensor fitted. Dräger states that its electrochemical sensors cover more than 100 toxic gases and oxygen, including CO, H2S, Cl2, NH3, NO2, SO2 and O2. Each sensor is ordered separately and plugs into the transmitter.
Does the sensor need calibration before it is installed?
No separate pre-installation calibration is required in the usual case. Each DrägerSensor stores its calibration and configuration data in a built-in memory and is supplied pre-calibrated, so it is ready for operation once connected. Routine field calibration intervals still apply according to your site procedure.
Which communication options are available?
The transmitter provides a 3-wire 4 to 20 mA analogue output with HART. Digital variants with PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 and Modbus RTU are also listed by Dräger, and custom configurations are ordered under kit number 8344800. Three optional relays give two alarm outputs and one fault output.
Can the sensor be mounted away from the transmitter?
Yes. The EC Sensing Head Remote allows the sensor to be installed up to 30 metres from the Dräger Polytron 8100 EC in a separate intrinsically safe housing with a field cable, which helps where the measuring point is hard to reach.
