Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT Flammable Gas Transmitter

Description

Overview

The Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT is a high-end, explosion-proof transmitter built to detect flammable gases and vapours before they approach the lower explosive limit. Its sensing element is the catalytic DrägerSensor Ex…DQ, a bead-type sensor with a fast response and strong resistance to poisoning. Besides the usual 3-wire 4 to 20 mA analogue output, the unit offers HART, fieldbus options and Modbus, so it can be integrated with most control systems used in a gas detection scheme.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT to oil and gas, petrochemical, power and industrial customers throughout Oman and the GCC. As a trusted supplier of Dräger safety instruments, we offer engineering support in Muscat, and we help project teams confirm the measuring range, housing material and communication protocol before placing an order, so that the transmitter arrives ready to commission.

Measuring Principle of the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT

Inside the type-DQ sensor, a catalytic bead oxidises combustible gas on a heated element. The heat released changes the electrical resistance of the bead relative to a reference element, and that difference is converted into a concentration value expressed as a percentage of the lower explosive limit (LEL). The Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT uses this proven measuring principle, and Dräger highlights its long-term stability and its resistance to substances that commonly shorten the life of catalytic sensors.

A newly designed gas inlet opening lets the sensor respond within seconds. The data sheet gives a T50 response time of 5 seconds and a T90 of 10 seconds for methane, which allows operators to start countermeasures early and prevent a flammable atmosphere from developing. In the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT, the DQ sensor covers 0 to 100 % LEL, while the LC sensor variant measures 0 to 10 % LEL for low-range applications.

Housing, Display and Digital Communication

The enclosure is flameproof, conforming to protection type “d”, and an additional terminal box is available for the increased-safety “e” version, which also eases pre-assembly. Customers can choose powder coated copper-free aluminium or SS316L stainless steel, with a sensor housing in stainless steel 303 or 316L. Protection ratings are NEMA 4X and IP65/66/67, with 3/4 inch NPT holes or an M20 cable gland for wiring.

On the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT, a large graphic backlit display shows the concentration and measuring unit, and green, yellow and red LEDs add alarm and status information. Operation is by magnetic wand over contact surfaces, so the cover stays closed in the hazardous area. Digital interfaces allow remote interrogation of the transmitter state, with PACTware integration possible through a DTM, and HART, PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 and Modbus RTU variants are available. The built-in data logger stores measuring and event data from earlier years.

Key Features

The Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT brings together sensing speed, robust construction and flexible integration:

  • Catalytic DrägerSensor Ex…DQ with excellent long-term stability and strong poison resistance.
  • Rapid response, with a T90 of 10 seconds for methane according to the data sheet.
  • Output options of 4 to 20 mA, HART, PROFIBUS PA, FOUNDATION fieldbus H1 and Modbus RTU.
  • Optional three relays, giving two freely adjustable concentration alarms and one fault alarm for stand-alone operation.
  • A remote sensing head so the sensor can sit close to the gas cloud while the display stays at eye level.
  • A built-in data logger that records measurement and event data over time.
  • A shared design and menu with the other Polytron 8000 series transmitters, which reduces training effort.
  • SIL 2 certification by TUEV Sued, plus UL, CSA, IECEx and ATEX approvals and marine approvals for the DQ sensor.

Industrial Applications

Typical uses for the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT include hydrocarbon storage and loading areas, compressor and pump stations, gas turbine enclosures, battery rooms and fuel handling bays, wherever methane, propane or other flammable vapours could accumulate. The remote sensor option of the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT is helpful on tall structures and in hard-to-reach positions, and the three-relay version can drive a local beacon or horn without an extra cable run back to a central controller.

Seven Star LLC helps engineering and maintenance teams in Muscat, the Sohar and Salalah economic zones and the rest of the GCC choose between the DQ and LC ranges, plan spare sensor stock and coordinate deliveries around shutdown windows. Because the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT shares its user interface with the toxic and infrared members of the series, mixed gas detection systems remain straightforward to operate.

About brand
Gas detection is the part of Dräger that plant safety teams meet first: a Polytron transmitter on a pipe rack, an X-am clipped to a coverall, a box of detector tubes in the permit office. The company was founded in Lübeck, Germany, in 1889. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Dräger fixed gas transmitters, flame detectors, portable gas detectors and Dräger-Tubes for sites in Oman, and checks each part number against the manufacturer's documentation.

Dräger gas detection product families listed here

Fixed detection is covered by the Polytron line: the Polytron 8100 EC for toxic gases and oxygen with electrochemical sensors, the Polytron 8200 CAT for flammable gases with a catalytic sensor, the Polytron 7000 and the PIR 7000 point infrared detector for hydrocarbons. Dräger flame detectors on this page are the Flame 1500 and Flame 2500 (triple infrared) and the Flame 2700 (multi-infrared). Portable instruments include the Pac 8000 single-gas detector, the X-am 2500 for one to four gases and the X-am 8000 for up to seven. Short-term colorimetric tubes such as Hydrogen Sulfide 100/a (CH29101) are listed with the analyzer accessories.

Where Dräger detectors are used

Polytron transmitters and PIR 7000 heads are found on wellhead and gathering facilities, gas plants, refineries, tank farms, LNG and petrochemical units, and in water treatment chlorine rooms. Portable Dräger gas detectors serve confined space entry, hot work permits and personal H2S monitoring, which is routine on sour fields in the GCC. Detector tubes remain a simple spot check where an electronic sensor is not available for the gas.

Ordering Dräger equipment: what we need

Dräger identifies most items by a seven-digit part number, such as 8101211, and that number is the most direct route to the right quotation. For a fixed transmitter, add the target gas, measuring range, output (4-20 mA, HART or relays), housing material, cable entry thread and the required hazardous-area approval. For portables, list the sensor configuration, pump or diffusion mode and the charger or calibration accessories needed. For tubes, give the gas and the range printed on the box.

Frequently Asked Questions

What measuring principle does the Dräger Polytron 8200 CAT use?
It uses a catalytic bead measuring principle in the DrägerSensor Ex...DQ. Dräger highlights the sensor's long-term stability and strong resistance to poisoning, and the DQ type covers 0 to 100 % LEL while the LC type covers 0 to 10 % LEL.
How fast does it respond to gas?
The data sheet gives a T50 response time of 5 seconds and a T90 of 10 seconds for methane. A newly designed gas inlet opening is credited with the quick response, which gives operators time to take countermeasures before a flammable atmosphere develops.
Can it be used as a stand-alone alarm unit?
Yes. The transmitter can be supplied with three integrated relays, which provide two freely adjustable concentration alarms and one fault alarm. Audible alarms or signal lights can then be controlled locally without an additional cable back to a central controller.
Is a stainless steel version available?
Yes. The housing is offered in powder coated copper-free aluminium or SS316L stainless steel, with a stainless steel sensor housing. Order numbers include aluminium versions such as 8344439 and stainless steel versions such as 8344448, and custom builds use kit 8344800.
