Crowcon Gas-Pro Multi-Gas Detector

Description

Overview

The Crowcon Gas-Pro is a personal multi-gas monitor that detects up to five gases in a compact and rugged body. It is designed with industrial users and fleet managers in mind: a single large button makes it easy to operate while wearing gloves, minimal training is required, and a top-mounted backlit display lets the wearer read gas levels by simply looking down. An optional internal pump, activated with a flow plate, allows the Crowcon Gas-Pro to be used in either pumped or diffusion mode and makes pre-entry testing straightforward.

The instrument monitors common hazards such as hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas and oxygen depletion, and can be configured with sensors for many other toxic gases. Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon Gas-Pro to oil and gas, petrochemical, utilities and marine customers in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, offering engineering support from Muscat for configuration, accessories and service parts.

Detection Principle

Flammable gases are detected with a pellistor sensor that reads 0 to 100% LEL in 1% LEL steps. The pellistor can be programmed in the field for methane, hydrogen, propane, ethane or acetylene, so the Crowcon Gas-Pro can be matched to the main fuel on a given site. Toxic gases and oxygen are measured with electrochemical cells: hydrogen sulphide 0–100 ppm, carbon monoxide 0–500 ppm or 0–2000 ppm (including a hydrogen-filtered version), oxygen 0–25% by volume, and options for ammonia, chlorine, nitrogen dioxide, sulphur dioxide, ozone, hydrogen cyanide, chlorine dioxide and nitric oxide. Carbon dioxide from 0 to 5% by volume is also available.

A dedicated pre-entry check mode guides the user through testing a confined space before entry. When used with the pump, sampled air is drawn across the sensors through tubing, so the atmosphere in a tank or pit can be checked from outside. Bump and calibration reminders keep the Crowcon Gas-Pro in a known good condition, which is important on sites where many instruments are shared between shifts.

Engineering Design of the Crowcon Gas-Pro

The housing measures 43 x 130 x 84 mm. A four-gas unit weighs 309 g (340 g pumped), and a five-gas unit weighs 333 g (362 g pumped). The Crowcon Gas-Pro is independently tested to IP65 and IP67, so it resists dust, water jets and temporary immersion. Alarms combine an audible signal above 95 dB at 30 cm (98 dB in loud mode), all-angle dual red and blue LEDs and a vibrating alert. The top-mount display uses a dual-colour backlight, green or red, so the wearer can see status at a glance.

Power is supplied by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery giving more than 14 hours of operation (13 hours pumped) with a typical methane, oxygen, H2S and CO configuration, and a typical charge time of 7.5 hours. Data logging stores 125 hours at 10-second intervals (45,000 logs) and up to 1,000 events, including alarms, over-range, calibration, bump, power and TWA resume events. The instrument is compatible with the Crowcon Connect fleet management system.

The Crowcon Gas-Pro operates from -20 to +55 °C and can be stored from -20 to +65 °C, with a humidity range of 10 to 95% RH; the datasheet notes that toxic and oxygen sensors are not rated for continuous operation above 50 °C, a point worth remembering for equipment left in vehicles or exposed sheds during the Omani summer. It complies with the EMC Directive 2014/30/EU and EN 50270 and carries FCC and CE marking. Because the event log records alarms, bumps and calibrations, safety officers can review exactly how each unit has been used and maintained.

Key Features

Practical advantages of the Crowcon Gas-Pro for field crews include:

  • Detection of up to five gases in a compact, rugged housing.
  • Single-button operation that works while wearing gloves.
  • Top-mounted display with green and red backlight for easy reading while worn.
  • Optional internal pump activated by the flow plate for pumped or diffusion use.
  • Dedicated pre-entry check mode for confined space testing.
  • Field-programmable pellistor for methane, hydrogen, propane, ethane or acetylene.
  • Independently tested to IP65 and IP67, with bump and calibration reminders.
  • More than 14 hours of battery life and Crowcon Connect fleet compatibility.

Industrial Applications

Across Oman the Crowcon Gas-Pro is well suited to confined space entry in refinery and gas plant vessels, tank cleaning at storage terminals, maintenance of sewer and wastewater networks, and work inside cable trenches and valve chambers for utilities. The Marine Equipment Directive approval also makes it a practical choice for ship crews and offshore support vessels calling at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. Because the pump is integral and activated by the flow plate, the same unit can be worn for personal protection and then used for pre-entry checks without extra equipment.

Sites that already use the Crowcon Gasman single gas detector for single-gas duties often add the Gas-Pro for entry work, and some fleets compare it with the MSA ALTAIR 4XR or Dräger X-am 2500 multi-gas detector. Seven Star LLC supplies the Crowcon Gas-Pro, chargers, flow plates and calibration accessories to customers in Muscat and across the GCC, with engineering support.

About brand
Crowcon has made gas detection instruments since 1970 and is based in Abingdon, United Kingdom. The company builds portable detectors worn or carried by workers and fixed detectors and control panels for plant areas, covering flammable gases, toxic gases and oxygen. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Crowcon portable gas detectors, sensors and accessories for sites in Oman, including the Gas-Pro and Gasman listed on this page.

Crowcon portable detectors listed here

The Gasman is a single-gas personal detector, worn by one person to warn of one hazard such as hydrogen sulfide, carbon monoxide, flammable gas or low oxygen. The Gas-Pro is a multi-gas detector for confined space entry and can be ordered with an internal pump for pre-entry sampling. In both cases the sensor fit is chosen at the time of order.

Ordering Crowcon detectors: what we need

Send the gases and ranges you need, the alarm levels if they differ from the manufacturer's defaults, and for a Gas-Pro if the pumped version is wanted. For spare sensors, send the detector model, serial number and the gas. Add chargers, sampling kits or test accessories to the same inquiry. Contractors in the GCC should state the approval marking their site permit system asks for.
