Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RFD Remote Flammable Detector
Description
Sensepoint XCD RFD remote flammable gas transmitter explained
Sensepoint XCD RFD is the remote-sensor version of the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD transmitter family. RFD stands for Remote Flammable Detector. The transmitter body stays in a place where people can reach and read it, while the flammable gas sensor is mounted separately, up to 30 m (100 ft) away, where the hazard or the heat actually is. Seven Star LLC supplies Sensepoint XCD RFD in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.
The datasheet ordering structure is short. SPXCD is the platform, then a letter for certification (A for ATEX/IECEx), a letter for enclosure material (L for LM25 aluminium alloy, S for 316 stainless steel), a letter for entries (M for two M20 side entries and one M25 bottom entry) and RFD for the remote flammable version. That gives the two codes in the datasheet: SPXCDALMRFD in LM25 and SPXCDASMRFD in 316 stainless steel. The sensor is always ordered as a separate line.
Sensepoint XCD RFD technical specifications

How the Sensepoint XCD RFD handles remote sensors
The transmitter reads the sensor over three wires: a sensitive-bead feed, a non-sensitive bead return and a signal line. In the cable the colours are brown, blue and white. For a high temperature Sensepoint head an additional earth conductor is also connected. Because the electronics are away from the sensor, the head that sits in a hot enclosure, a duct or an oven can run at far higher temperatures than the electronics could tolerate.
A tri-colour backlit LCD is the status indicator: steady green for normal, flashing yellow for fault and flashing red for alarm. This is useful when the sensor is out of sight, since a person walking by can see state from a distance. Alarm set points, range, relay behaviour and the electronic tag are all adjusted on the LCD with magnetic switches, and the output is inhibited automatically while that is done.
Default alarms for flammable sensors are 20 % LEL for A1 and 40 % LEL for A2. The relay contacts can be set normally open or closed and energised or de-energised; by default the alarm relays are normally open and de-energised and the fault relay is normally open and energised.
Sensors that pair with Sensepoint XCD RFD
The datasheet lists several sensor choices, and their operating limits differ, so the sensor often decides the application.
| Sensor | Gas / range | Operating temperature |
|---|---|---|
| Sensepoint standard flammable | 0-100 % LEL, T90 below 25 s | -55 °C to +80 °C |
| Sensepoint high temperature flammable | 0-20 % or 0-100 % LEL, T90 below 10 s | -55 °C to +150 °C |
| XCD plug-in catalytic bead | 0-100 % LEL | -40 °C to +65 °C |
| XCD plug-in infrared, methane | 0-100 % LEL | -20 °C to +50 °C |
| XCD plug-in infrared, propane or CO2 | Propane 0-100 % LEL, CO2 0-2 % vol; availability on request | -20 °C to +50 °C |
Related catalogue items from the same datasheet include the remote plug-in sensor and socket codes SPXCDXSRFXSS (catalytic), SPXCDXSRRXSS (methane IR), SPXCDXSRPXSS (propane IR) and SPXCDXSRB1SS (CO2 IR), as well as the Exe junction box 2052D0001, duct mounting assembly 90053-A-7041, calibration cup S3KCAL, collecting cone SPXCDCC, mounting bracket SPXCDMTBR, sunshade or deluge cover SPXCDSDP and weather cap SPXCDWP. The standard Sensepoint XCD transmitter and the XNX are related but different products.
Selecting a Sensepoint XCD RFD configuration
- Ambient temperature at the sensor position: choose the high temperature Sensepoint head up to +150 °C or a plug-in XCD sensor for normal conditions.
- Target gas: catalytic for general flammables, infrared where poisoning or inert atmospheres are a concern.
- Housing: LM25 aluminium or 316 stainless steel, depending on corrosion exposure.
- Distance between sensor and transmitter, which must stay within 30 m.
- Control system input: sink or source, relay needs and Modbus availability (the Modbus RS485 terminal is listed as optional or pending in the datasheet).
- Mounting: wall plate with four M8 holes or the optional pipe kit for pipe from 1.5 to 3 in.
Typical cable lengths for catalytic sensors are about 356 m with 0.5 mm² and 1636 m with 2.5 mm² cable, and about 420 m and 1932 m for infrared, assuming a 24 V dc minimum controller supply and 250 Ω loop resistance.
Installation and maintenance notes for Sensepoint XCD RFD
Fix the transmitter at a convenient height, route armoured cable through M20 and M25 glands, and use the plug-in terminal blocks to simplify wiring. Source or sink is selected with a switch behind the display module, so choose it before closing the unit. Terminate the cable screen at one end only.
At the sensor end, use the junction box or duct assembly rated for the temperature and the area. For routine work, the magnetic switch interface allows one person to calibrate with the calibration cup, and the outputs inhibit automatically. Keep spare sensors on the shelf because catalytic beads age in service and should be replaced according to the site maintenance plan.
Where Sensepoint XCD RFD is used in Oman and the GCC
The manufacturer highlights gas turbine enclosures and solvent-based printing and coating drying ovens. In Oman and the GCC the same remote layout suits turbine halls at power stations, hot compressor enclosures, ovens and furnaces at industrial plants, and tight pipe racks where a person should not need to climb. Mounting the display at ground level reduces working-at-height risk, and the 316 stainless steel housing is a sensible choice near the coast where salt and humidity are constant.

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.
Where Honeywell products are used
In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.
