Brand:

AUMA SQEx 14.2 Explosion-Proof Part-Turn Actuator

Description

Overview

AUMA SQEx 14.2 is the top frame of the explosion-proof part-turn range. It offers a tripping torque window of 800 Nm to 2,400 Nm, with a run torque of 630 Nm at the 24 s and 36 s ratios and 840 Nm at 48 s and slower. It is the actuator AUMA specifies for the largest quarter-turn valves that must work inside classified areas without moving to a gearbox combination.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SQEx 14.2 to terminals, refineries and gas plants across Oman and the wider GCC. Because valves of this size are normally long-lead items, we engage with project teams early to confirm torque, marking and documentation.

Heaviest Duty in the Ex Range

The AUMA SQEx 14.2 has five operating times at 50 Hz: 24, 36, 48, 72 and 100 seconds. For the two fastest, tripping torque is limited to 1,800 Nm and run torque is 630 Nm; for the three slowest, the full 2,400 Nm and 840 Nm are available. Because the run torque of 840 Nm is the permissible load for 15 minutes of running, the valve’s dynamic torque must stay within that value for the duty to hold.

The minimum tripping torque is 800 Nm, which makes this frame unsuitable for smaller valves. Protection of the 3-phase motor is by PTC thermistors as standard, with thermoswitches as an option, but AUMA notes that EN 60079-14 requires an additional thermal overcurrent protection device with thermoswitches. Starts are limited to 60 per hour, and the handwheel needs 51 or 70 turns for 90 degrees.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQEx 14.2

The AUMA SQEx 14.2 has an EN ISO 5211 F14 standard flange with F16 option and a coupling for shafts up to 60 mm cylindrical, 46 mm square and 46 mm two-flat. Its 200 mm handwheel does not rotate during electrical operation, and mechanical position indication is continuous and visible without power. A lever and base option is available for linkage-driven valves.

At about 47 kg, or 58 kg with base and lever, it is the heaviest part-turn actuator of the series and needs lifting equipment on site. IP68 enclosure protection applies with an additionally sealed terminal compartment, and corrosion protection is KS with KX and aluminium-free KX-G options. The standard ambient range is -30 °C to +40 °C or +60 °C depending on version, and the exact limits are stated on the name plate.

Key Features

The AUMA SQEx 14.2 carries the largest torque capacity in the explosion-proof SQEx family.

  • An 800 Nm to 2,400 Nm tripping range and 630 Nm to 840 Nm run torque serve the largest Ex quarter-turn valves.
  • Five operating times from 24 s to 100 s support surge-conscious closing on big pipelines.
  • DEKRA 13ATEX0016 X certification applies to the documented gas and dust markings.
  • F14 flange with F16 option and shafts up to 60 mm cylindrical.
  • A 200 mm handwheel with 51 or 70 turns allows controlled manual setting despite the high gear reduction.
  • KS, KX and aluminium-free KX-G coating options for aggressive coastal sites.
  • A base and lever option adapts the drive to linkage-operated valves.
  • AMExC and ACExC controls complete the hazardous-area package.

Selection Guidance for the AUMA SQEx 14.2

Because the AUMA SQEx 14.2 is the largest Ex part-turn frame, treat the order as a project rather than a catalogue purchase. Confirm the valve torque, the flange, the coupling and the marking, and agree the delivery date with the construction schedule, since a large drive is heavy and needs crane support during installation.

Check the supply as well. Motor starting current on a 3-phase drive of this class affects cable sizing, and the explosion-proof controls need a power feed that matches the actuator voltage and frequency. Finally, remember that the standard ambient range of the explosion-proof version ends at +40 °C or +60 °C, so desert sites with strong solar loading should confirm the version before the order is placed.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQEx 14.2 is used on the largest butterfly and ball valves in classified areas: crude oil export lines, large loading arms, and big gas header isolation valves. Port and terminal facilities along the Oman coast combine high torque requirements with corrosive air, so the KS and KX coating options matter alongside the explosion protection documentation.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SQEx 14.2 on request to projects in Oman and across the GCC.

For smaller Ex valves see the AUMA SQEx 12.2 and AUMA SQEx 10.2.

The family is described on the AUMA SQEx explosion-proof part-turn actuator page, the standard version is the AUMA SQ part-turn actuator range, and gearbox solutions are in the AUMA GS part-turn gearboxes range.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
