Quarter-Turn Drive Logic

Inside the AUMA SQ 05.2 a three-phase squirrel-cage motor drives a worm gear stage, and the final stage delivers a rotation of roughly a quarter turn to a splined output coupling. The swing angle is adjustable between 75 degrees and just under 105 degrees as standard, with further ranges available as options for valves that need a shorter or longer stroke. Limit switching uses a counter gear mechanism, and the torque switching can be set separately for the OPEN and CLOSE directions inside the 50 to 150 Nm window.

A splined coupling transmits the torque and can be supplied unbored for machining on site, or bored with a keyway, square or two-flat profile. The maximum shaft diameters are 25.4 mm cylindrical, 22 mm square and 22 mm across flats, which fits typical small ball valve stems. A 160 mm handwheel allows emergency and setting operation and needs 11 or 16 turns for a full 90 degrees depending on the gear ratio chosen with the operating time.

At about 21 kg including the unbored coupling and handwheel, or about 27 kg with the optional base and lever, the SQ 05.2 is light enough for straightforward installation on pipe racks, skids and walkways. A 1-phase AC version is documented at roughly 23 kg, and AUMA also lists DC motor versions of this size with operating times between 3.5 s and 18.5 s for supply systems without an AC grid. Enclosure protection is IP68 and the standard coating system is KS, intended for high salinity and almost permanent condensation, which is relevant for coastal installations along the Gulf of Oman.
