AUMA SA 16.2 Multi-Turn Actuator
Description
Overview
AUMA SA 16.2 is an AUMA NORM multi-turn actuator for open-close duty with a tripping-torque window of 400 to 1,000 Nm and 12 output speeds from 4 to 180 rpm. SA 16.2 is the largest of the compact SA 07.2 to SA 16.2 group, delivering 400 to 1,000 Nm on an F16 flange with a 77 mm stem bore and a 500 mm handwheel. It is where main-line isolation duty begins.
Customers in Oman and the GCC buy the SA 16.2 from Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of AUMA products, which checks the valve data with them before the order is placed.
Operating Principle
The SA 16.2 stops at the OPEN and CLOSED limits by counting motor turns and trips on torque in each direction between 400 and 1,000 Nm. Standard duty is S2 – 15 min, while S2 – 30 min is an option. At 125 and 180 rpm the torque falls to 800 Nm, and self-locking applies up to 90 rpm only.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SA 16.2
At 180 rpm the S2-15 min torque is reduced to 800 Nm, and the actuator is not self-locking above 90 rpm, so very fast stroking should be avoided on valves that could be back-driven by line pressure. For most large valves the 4 to 22 rpm range is both self-locking and gives the full 1,000 Nm.
Key Features
Points to weigh when specifying the AUMA SA 16.2:
- Large multi-turn actuator for heavy gate valves and sluice gates.
- 400 Nm is the lowest and 1,000 Nm the highest tripping setting, a 2.5 to 1 range.
- 710 Nm is the S2 – 30 min limit, about 71 percent of the largest tripping setting.
- The torque-to-weight ratio at full setting is 12.0 to 14.9 Nm/kg.
- An illustrative stroke of 40 turns takes about 75.0 seconds at 32 rpm.
- Neighbouring frames are the SA 14.6 and the SA 25.1.
- Dimension and electrical data are published by AUMA in separate documents.
Selecting the AUMA SA 16.2
Weight is the headline difference from the SA 16.2 neighbours: the unit is quoted at 67 kg for the slow speeds, 79 kg in the middle of the speed range and 83 kg at the fastest ratios, compared with 46 to 53 kg for the SA 14.6. The flange moves from F14 to F16 and the stem capacity from 58 mm to 77 mm. For torque beyond 1,000 Nm the range continues with the SA 25.1 on an F25 flange, so there is no frame size that bridges an F16 valve to higher torque without an adapter or gearbox.
Typical partners are large gate valves on water-transmission and cooling-water mains, heavy globe valves, penstocks and rising-stem sluice gates in intake structures, and large knife-gate valves in wastewater plants.
Large gate valves and sluice gates in the 400 to 1,000 Nm class are frequently fitted with a bevel or spur gearbox when the valve is buried or needs a vertical stem orientation. AUMA’s multi-turn gearbox ranges accept the AUMA SA 16.2 as input, and the same actuator can therefore serve vertical stems, offset installations and valve chambers where the actuator cannot sit directly above the valve. Gearbox ratio multiplies the actuator torque while dividing the speed, so a single actuator size can cover a surprisingly wide band of valve torque if the gearbox is chosen with the valve maker. Remember to ask the valve maker for the stem diameter, the thread lead and the direction of closing, so that the output drive coupling, the stem nut and the rotation direction of the motor can be confirmed on the order confirmation before any unit leaves the factory.
Sizing example for the AUMA SA 16.2
For an illustrative large gate valve with 620 Nm breakaway and 340 Nm running torque, a 25 percent allowance gives about 775 Nm. That sits inside the 400 to 1,000 Nm window of the AUMA SA 16.2, but it is also close to the 800 Nm available in S2-15 min duty at 180 rpm, so a speed of 90 rpm or lower is the better choice. A 40-turn stroke at 11 rpm takes about 218 seconds, at 22 rpm about 109 seconds and at 45 rpm about 53 seconds. These numbers are an illustrative calculation and not AUMA data.
Installation and Mounting of the AUMA SA 16.2
With 67 to 83 kg of mass the AUMA SA 16.2 must be lifted with a hoist or crane, and the valve yoke has to be able to carry the weight and the reaction torque. The F16 flange accepts stems up to 77 mm and the 500 mm handwheel needs a generous swing radius. Plan a drain path for the housing breather and avoid mounting positions in which the handwheel hub is lower than the cable entries.
Industrial Applications
Seawater intake and outfall valves at coastal desalination plants, main discharge valves at large booster stations, and wastewater inlet works in Muscat and Salalah are typical homes for the AUMA SA 16.2. In Gulf conditions the weather-proof IP68 housing and KS corrosion protection make it suitable for outdoor valve chambers without extra enclosures, and the 500 mm handwheel provides a realistic emergency-operation route.
Next to the SA 16.2, our genuine AUMA range includes the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn electric actuator, the AUMA SAR 14.1 multi-turn actuator and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator.
Neighbouring sizes and counterparts: AUMA SA 14.6 multi-turn actuator and AUMA SA 25.1 multi-turn actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.
AUMA actuator and gearbox types
SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.Where AUMA electric actuators are used
