AUMA SAV Variable-Speed Multi-Turn Actuator
Overview
AUMA SAV multi-turn actuators are the variable-speed members of the AUMA SA family, built for open-close duty and inching or positioning duty (classes A and B according to EN ISO 22153) on valves where a fixed operating speed is a compromise. Where a conventional multi-turn actuator runs at one speed for every move, the AUMA SAV is paired with the ACV 01.2 actuator controls, whose integral frequency converter lets the output speed be set across a control ratio of 1:10. The result is a drive that can travel quickly through mid-stroke and slow down to a gentle, controlled approach at the end positions. The actuator covers a torque range from 10 Nm to 1,000 Nm across six sizes, from SAV 07.2 to SAV 16.2.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SAV to water utilities, power producers, process plants and industrial contractors across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Our instrumentation division in Muscat helps engineering teams match the correct size, speed range and supply voltage to each valve, and provides genuine AUMA documentation, warranty backing and regional support for every order.
Variable-Speed Operating Principle of the AUMA SAV
The AUMA SAV combines a specially designed 3-phase AC asynchronous motor with a frequency converter housed in the ACV 01.2 controls. Whether the plant supplies the actuator with 3-phase or 1-phase AC power, the motor is always a 3-phase machine; the converter generates the voltage and frequency the motor needs and in doing so compensates for mains voltage and frequency fluctuations. The converter is developed by AUMA to keep torque available across a broad speed range, and it removes the high inrush current that a fixed-speed motor draws at every start. Three speed ranges are offered at 50 Hz: 6–60 rpm, 12–120 rpm and 24–240 rpm, and within each range the speed can be adjusted over the 1:10 ratio.
Because speed becomes a parameter rather than a constant, the controls can apply it to the process. Operations out of an end position begin at zero speed and ramp up to the set value (soft start); before the end position is reached the speed is decreased linearly (soft stop). A speed profile can specify different values for up to ten sections of travel, independent of direction, so a valve can close quickly in mid-travel and slowly in the critical last part of the stroke. This is the practical answer to pressure surges and water hammer in long pipelines. Emergency and failure behaviour can also be assigned its own speed setpoint, so that the safe position is reached as quickly as the process allows.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SAV
The mechanical heart of the AUMA SAV is the proven AUMA SA .2 actuator housing with limit and torque sensing, a handwheel for manual setting and emergency operation that does not rotate during electrical operation, and a motor with thermoswitches (PTC thermistors optional). Standard enclosure protection is IP68 with the AUMA 3-phase AC motor, KS corrosion protection with a double-layer powder coating in AUMA silver-grey, and the permissible ambient temperature range is –30 °C to +70 °C, with options down to –40 °C or –60 °C for special sites. The sound pressure level is below 72 dB(A).
Valve attachment follows EN ISO 5210 as standard (flanges F07 to F16, output drive type B1) with DIN 3210 and other output drive types as options. Electrical connection is made through the AUMA plug/socket connector with screw-type connection, with terminals or crimp-type connection as alternatives, and cable entries are available in metric, Pg, NPT or G threads. Positioning accuracy is better than 0.2 %, and an optional magnetic limit and torque transmitter allows non-intrusive settings and a mechanical position indicator shows the valve position continuously.
Key Features
The following capabilities make the AUMA SAV a practical upgrade over a fixed-speed actuator on demanding valves:
- A speed control ratio of 1:10 allows the same actuator to run fast when time matters and slowly when the valve or pipeline needs protection.
- Soft start and soft stop remove abrupt acceleration and deceleration, reducing mechanical wear on the valve stem, gearing and seats.
- A speed profile with up to ten travel sections limits closing speed in the critical stroke range and helps avoid pressure surges.
- Separate speed setpoints can be programmed for EMERGENCY behaviour and for failure behaviour on loss of signal or communication.
- Multiport valve operation lets up to 16 positions be approached quickly and precisely from a single actuator.
- The integral process controller (PID), fieldbus control, programmable potential-free output contacts and operation data logging reduce external hardware.
- Bluetooth connectivity to a notebook or Android tablet speeds commissioning and diagnostics without opening the housing.
- The frequency converter tolerates 1-phase supply and mains fluctuations while eliminating high start-up currents.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SAV is a natural fit for water transmission and distribution, where closing speed on large isolation and control valves determines whether a surge wave builds in the pipeline. In Oman, that includes desalination plants, reservoir inlets and booster stations in Muscat, Salalah and the Sohar industrial area, where slow, profiled closing protects mains and pumps. It is equally useful on cooling-water systems for power stations and district cooling, on dampers and gates that benefit from gentle end-position approach, and on process lines where a valve must open quickly during start-up and then be positioned slowly during normal operation.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SAV together with matching ACV 01.2 controls, gearboxes and accessories, and supports specification from the first RFQ to commissioning. For hazardous areas that require ATEX-certified variable-speed drives, we supply the explosion-proof AUMA SAVEx variant instead, and for continuous modulating control with closed-loop positioning we offer the AUMA SARV. Our team can advise which model suits each valve in your plant. Specifying the AUMA SAV early in the design phase also lets the pipeline designer fix surge-protection speed profiles during commissioning instead of retrofitting slow-closing logic later, so the AUMA SAV suits projects where closing time is part of the hydraulic study. For projects that combine the AUMA SAV with other drives or controls, Seven Star LLC also supplies the AUMA SARV, the AUMA SAVEx and the AUMA SDL/SDG variable-speed actuator.
