Honeywell FS20X Plus UV/3IR Flame Detector

Description

FS20X Plus UV/3IR flame detector for mixed-fuel hazards

The Honeywell FS20X Plus is a flame detector that pairs an ultraviolet sensor with three infrared bands to cover hydrocarbon, non-hydrocarbon and hydrogen fires in a single housing. It is the newer, simplified member of the FS20X family: the standard FS20X is built around UV/dual IR/visible sensing, while the FS20X Plus reduces the ordering matrix and bundles communications, mounting and a sunshade. Seven Star LLC supplies the FS20X Plus in Oman and the GCC as an independent supplier in Muscat.

Honeywell positions it for sites where rain, fog and smoke make long-range optical detection difficult, and where specifying a different detector for each fuel adds cost and spares. A high-visibility LED halo ring around the lens shows status from a distance, which helps operators and maintenance teams check a detector from the walkway.

Decoding the FS20XP part number

The datasheet gives a short ordering string, so there is little room for error. The part number begins FS20XP- and then adds one letter per option.

Position Meaning Options
Material Enclosure material S = stainless steel, A = aluminium
Entries Cable or conduit entries M = M25, N = 3/4 in NPT
Approvals Approval set G = global
Reserved Not used X = standard
Accessories Included mount and sunshade X = standard mount + sunshade, M = marine mount + sunshade

The datasheet example is FS20XP-SMGXX, which is the stainless-steel, M25-entry kit with the standard SM4 mount and SH-002 sunshade. The aluminium enclosure is described as low-copper aluminium with marine-grade paint; the stainless-steel enclosure is electropolished CF8M.

Flame response by fuel for the FS20X Plus

The datasheet gives measured response distances at very high sensitivity, outdoors, with a typical response of 5 seconds. Fire size is 0.3 m x 0.3 m for liquid pool fires and a 9.5 mm orifice jet for gases, unless stated. The ratio between very high, high, medium and low sensitivities is roughly 100 %, 75 %, 50 % and 25 %.

Fuel Distance at very high sensitivity
n-Heptane 84 m
IPA 61 m
Diesel 61 m
Kerosene 49 m
Methanol 32 m
Ethanol 49 m
Methane 30 m
Butane 59 m
Propane 61 m
Hydrogen 27 m
Acetylene 34 m
Syngas 27 m
Silane 21 m

The spread matters for design. The gas-jet distances for hydrogen, methane and silane are much shorter than the heptane figure, so a layout based on the heptane distance alone would overstate coverage. Always use the distance for the worst credible fuel at your site.

Where the FS20X Plus fits in the system

The FS20X Plus connects to a fire and gas panel or PLC through relays or the 4-20 mA loop, and to a maintenance laptop through FlameManager over HART or USB. FlameManager is the PC application used for set-up and includes post-event analysis with the Honeywell FirePic tool. The opto-electronics module can be swapped in the field, which shortens repairs. Related models include the FS20X (UV/dual IR/VIS) and the FSL100 series for light-duty indoor zones.

Selecting the FS20X Plus: checklist

  • Material: stainless steel for offshore and coastal sites, aluminium where corrosion risk is lower.
  • Entries: M25 or 3/4 in NPT.
  • Mount: standard SM4 or marine SM4-M, both with the SH-002 sunshade included in the kit.
  • Approvals: the datasheet lists ATEX, IECEx and cFMus hazardous-area marks, plus FM 3260, EN 54-10 classes, IEC 61508 SIL 2 and marine approvals. It marks CU-TR, CCC and the marine approvals as pending, so ask us to check certificate status for your project.
  • Fuels and distances: compare your design fire to the response table above.
  • Output: confirm whether you need mA source, sink or isolated, and HART 7 or Modbus.

Installation and maintenance notes for the FS20X Plus

The included SM4 mount and sunshade make mechanical installation simpler than with the older FS20X, which needs a separate bracket. A sunshade is useful in the Gulf, where direct sun heats the housing. Use shielded cable and keep the supply within 18 to 32 Vdc; at the maximum 12 W heater load, size the power supply for the whole detector group, not just average draw.

For maintenance, keep the window clean, run the site function test, and use FlameManager to check status and review events. If a module fails, the opto-electronics section can be replaced without changing the whole housing.

Typical FS20X Plus applications in Oman and the GCC

The ability to see hydrocarbon, non-hydrocarbon and hydrogen fires in one device suits mixed-fuel facilities: gas processing plants, refineries and petrochemical units, power stations, desalination and utilities sites with fuel storage, and loading terminals. High ambient temperatures, dust and coastal humidity are routine in the region, and the -55 to +75 °C range, IP66/67 enclosure and stainless-steel option address those conditions.

About brand

Honeywell is the American industrial technology group whose products on this site cover gas and flame detection, pressure transmitters, flow measurement, gas metering, fire alarm systems and helicopter rotor balancing equipment. Its roots go back to a thermostat business in Minneapolis in 1885 and to Mark Honeywell's heating company, which merged with it in 1927. Several brands we list have joined Honeywell over the years: Gent fire systems of Leicester (part of Honeywell since 2005), Chadwick-Helmuth (a Honeywell business unit from 2002) and Elster gas metering (acquired around the end of 2015).

Gas detection uses two basic approaches. Point detectors such as the Sensepoint XCD measure the gas at one location, with a catalytic or infrared sensor for flammable gas and an electrochemical cell for toxic gas such as H2S. Open path detectors such as the Searchline Excel send an infrared beam across an area up to a few hundred metres long and detect a gas cloud anywhere along it. Infrared sensors cannot be poisoned the way catalytic beads can, which matters on sites with silicones or H2S.

Where Honeywell products are used

In Oman and the GCC, Honeywell gas detectors protect wellheads, gas plants, refineries and tank farms. Elster meters and flow computers measure gas at city gate stations and in industry. Gent systems are installed in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels, and Chadwick-Helmuth balancers are used by helicopter operators.

Ordering Honeywell products: what we need

Send the part number from the label (for example 02104-N-XSSA or SPXCDASMTXF). For gas detectors, add the gas, range, output and certification. For gas meters, add size (DN), flow range and pressure rating. For Gent equipment, add the panel type and loop protocol.

Facts checked against Honeywell press releases and SEC filings, and published histories of Gent and Chadwick-Helmuth, October 2026.

FAQ

Questions about the Honeywell FS20X Plus UV/3IR Flame Detector

Answers from our engineering team on installation, compatibility and integration.

01What kinds of fire does the FS20X Plus respond to?
It is designed to respond to hydrocarbon, non-hydrocarbon and hydrogen fires in one device, using UV and three-band IR sensing. The aim is that you do not need to specify a separate specialty detector for hydrogen or for non-carbon fuels.
02How do I read an FS20XP- part number?
The datasheet shows the pattern FS20XP- followed by material (S stainless steel, A aluminium), entries (M for M25, N for 3/4 in NPT), approvals (G for global), a reserved X, and accessories (X standard mount plus sunshade, or M marine mount plus sunshade). The example given is FS20XP-SMGXX.
03What range does the FS20X Plus achieve on a heptane fire?
For a 0.1 m² n-heptane fire, the datasheet lists 20 m at low, 40 m at medium, 59 m at high and 84 m at very high sensitivity. Typical response time is 5 seconds with a maximum of 10 seconds.
04Which communication options are included?
Modbus RS-485, the Honeywell FP2 protocol over RS-485 or USB, HART 7 over the 4-20 mA loop, three relays and a 4-20 mA output that can be configured as source, sink or isolated. These are standard rather than separate ordering codes.
05What temperature range does the FS20X Plus cover?
Operating temperature is -55 to +75 °C, or -50 to +75 °C for North America, with storage from -55 to +85 °C. Humidity is 0 to 99 % RH and the enclosure is IP66/67, Type 4X.
