ABB Contrac RSD10 Electrical Linear Actuator
Overview
The ABB Contrac RSD10 linear actuator is an electrical unit with a rated force of 10 kN (2,250 lbf) for continuous positioning or step control of final control elements with linear movement, such as globe control valves. The thrust rod transfers the force directly to the valve stem.
The actuator is part of ABB’s Contrac actuator range (RSD10/RSD20 linear actuators) and is powered and controlled only through a separate Contrac power electronic unit, EBN853 for field mounting or EBS852 for rack mounting. The electronic unit varies the motor torque steplessly until actuator force and process forces are balanced, giving stall-proof operation without position- or torque-dependent switch-off.

ABB Contrac RSD10 Installation and Wiring Notes
The actuator is shipped with the oil quantity for mounting orientation IMV 1. If it is installed in IMV 3 or IMB 5, oil must be added to the level given in the ABB instructions, and after mounting the highest inspection screw is replaced by the vent screw that is supplied loose. Desiccant bags placed under the brake cover and position sensor cover for storage must be removed before commissioning.
Mount the actuator on the valve yoke with the thrust rod fully retracted and fasten it with property class 8.8 screws. The valve stem must be centred and square to the actuator seat, with a parallel deviation below 0.1 mm over the full stroke. The stroke is factory set to the value on the ID label plus 3 to 5 mm; the internal stop can be reset to suit the valve.
Electrical connection is made at the EBN853 or EBS852 electronic unit, with the cable screen earthed at both ends. The factory default configuration is a 4-20 mA setpoint and 4-20 mA position feedback. End positions are not preset; they are taught at the local control panel or with the configuration software.
ABB Contrac RSD10 Maintenance Notes
ABB does not fix a maintenance interval for the RSD series. The electronic unit tracks the actual load on the actuator, such as force and temperature, and calculates the remaining time to the next routine service, which can be read with the configuration program. Routine work covers inspection of shafts, gears and the thrust rod surface, replacement of the motor shaft seal and ball bearings, a position sensor check and an oil change. Synthetic Mobil SHC 629 must not be mixed with mineral oil. If the position sensor is replaced, the operating range has to be set up again.
