Overview
The ABB Contrac RSD10 is an electric linear actuator for continuous positioning or step control of final control elements such as control valves, dampers and louvres. It provides a rated force of 10 kN (2,250 lbf) with compact dimensions, and is stall-proof without the need for position- or torque-dependent shut-off, allowing it to hold the final control element in position against the full process force. The actuator is driven by a three-phase asynchronous motor through a sturdy, highly efficient gear unit with internal rotary-linear conversion, and includes a handwheel for manual operation during commissioning or power failure.
Engineering and Design
The RSD10 is controlled by a Contrac electronic unit which serves as the interface between the actuator and the control system. During continuous positioning, the electronic unit varies the motor torque steplessly until the actuator force balances the process force and the required position is reached. Position feedback is provided through a 0/4-20 mA signal, and three digital inputs and three digital outputs support binary commands, with manual mode taking priority over automatic mode when a digital input is activated.
The actuator is powered via the electronic unit from 115 V AC or 230 V AC, and provides adjustable stroke ranges from 15 to 100 mm or 50 to 300 mm at operating speeds of 0.1 to 5.0 mm/s (0.1 to 7.5 mm/s as an option). The classification S9 – 100% overload protected in accordance with IEC 60034-1 / EN 60034-1 far exceeds the requirements of standard duty cycles, and the IP66 enclosure with humidity resistance up to 95% suits outdoor and process-area installation with ambient temperatures down to -10 C (variants to -30 C). Approximate weights are 57 kg for 100 mm stroke and 82 kg for 300 mm stroke units.
