ABB Electrical rotary actuator RHD1250 (Contrac)
Overview
The ABB RHD1250 (Contrac RHD1250) is a compact electric rotary actuator delivering 1250 Nm of rated torque for quarter-turn valves and dampers in light-to-medium duty process applications. As the smaller-torque member of ABB’s RHD electric rotary actuator range — which spans from 50 Nm up to 16000 Nm — the RHD1250 suits ball valves, butterfly valves, and small-to-mid-size dampers that don’t require the higher torque of the RHD4000 or RHD16000.
Seven Star LLC supplies the RHD1250 to process, water treatment, and utility facilities across Oman and the GCC, helping select the correct torque-rated actuator for each valve or damper.
Operating Principle
The RHD1250 converts electric motor rotation into rotary output torque, driving a valve or damper shaft between end positions in response to a control signal from its dedicated Contrac electronic unit. Its stall-proof S9-100% duty rating, per IEC 60034-1/EN 60034-1, lets the actuator hold an intermediate modulating position indefinitely without thermal derating, and rotation angle is field-configurable between 35° minimum and 270° maximum around a typical 90° quarter-turn setting.
Engineering Design of the ABB Contrac RHD1250
The RHD1250 delivers 1250 Nm of rated torque, adjustable to 0.5, 0.75, or 1.0 times rated output to match the actual valve or damper load. Travel time for a 90° stroke is adjustable from 30 to 900 seconds, with operating speed adjustable from 3.0 down to 0.1°/s for precise positioning. It is powered by 115VAC (94–130V) or 230VAC (190–260V) single-phase supply at 47.5–63Hz, housed in an IP66/NEMA 4X-rated enclosure, and operates standard across −10°C to 65°C.

Industrial Applications
The RHD1250 is specified for quarter-turn ball and butterfly valve actuation in process, water treatment, and utility plants across Muscat, Sohar, and Salalah, where torque demand is moderate and a compact actuator footprint is preferred. It is a common fit for HVAC dampers, smaller isolation valves, and general process control valves that don’t require the RHD4000 or RHD16000’s higher torque output.
Across the GCC’s process and utility sectors, the RHD1250 lets engineering teams standardize on the Contrac electric actuator platform across a range of valve sizes, using the same control electronics and spare-parts philosophy from the smallest RHD models up through the RHD16000 for the largest valves.

Sizing the Actuator for the Valve
The key selection step is matching actuator torque to the valve or damper. Obtain the breakaway, running and seating torque figures from the valve manufacturer, apply the safety margin required by your project specification, and confirm that the result sits within the adjustable 0.5, 0.75 or 1.0 times rated output of the ABB RHD1250. If the required torque with margin falls well below the lower settings, a smaller RHD model may be a better match; if it approaches the full rating, check whether the next size up is safer for dirty or high-differential-pressure service.
- Confirm the valve stem or shaft dimensions and the mounting flange, and specify the coupling or adapter needed.
- Check the required rotation angle and travel time against the process dynamics.
- Confirm the supply voltage available at site and the control signal from the DCS.
- For replacements, record the full type code from the existing actuator nameplate and quote it with the enquiry.
Installation and Commissioning
Mount the actuator on the valve with the valve in a known position, usually fully closed, and align the coupling without forcing the shaft. Connect power and signal cables through suitable glands to keep the IP66 rating intact. During commissioning, set the end positions, torque limit, rotation angle and travel time through the Contrac electronic unit, then stroke the valve from the control room to confirm direction, position feedback and alarm signals. Record the final parameter set for maintenance records.
Maintenance Recommendations
- Inspect cable entries and cover seals periodically, especially on outdoor installations exposed to dust and wash-down.
- Check the coupling and mounting bolts for looseness after the first months of operation.
- Review diagnostic and alarm information from the electronic unit to spot rising torque trends that may indicate valve wear.
- Keep a spare electronic unit or critical spares for plants with many actuators of the same family.
Troubleshooting
If the actuator stops before reaching the end position, check whether the torque setting is too low for the valve, or whether the valve itself is sticking. Erratic positioning often points to signal noise or a poor cable screen connection. A unit that does not respond at all should be checked for supply voltage and alarms in the electronic unit.
Applications in Oman
In water networks, desalination plants and utility facilities across Oman, the RHD1250 is a practical size for modulating butterfly valves and inlet dampers, where continuous positioning duty is required in high ambient temperatures.
