ABB STW Industrial Temperature Sensor
Description
Overview
The ABB STW is a high-performance industrial temperature sensor engineered to provide accurate and stable measurements in demanding process environments. Distinct from ABB’s SensyTemp TSP300 transmitter-integrated line, the STW is a thermowell-based sensor assembly offering flexible connection styles – threaded, flanged, or hygienic – letting engineers match the sensor directly to the specific process vessel or pipeline fitting already in place.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ABB STW to chemical processing, power generation, oil and gas, and water treatment operators across Oman and the wider GCC.Seven Star LLC supplies this item on request with the manufacturer documentation, and availability and lead time are confirmed at quotation.
Operating Principle
The STW is suitable for a wide variety of industries including chemical processing, power generation, oil and gas, and water treatment, offering excellent resistance to vibration, high pressure, and extreme temperatures, ensuring long-term reliability and minimal maintenance. Its fast response time and superior accuracy allow it to detect even the slightest changes in temperature, ensuring optimal control of industrial processes.
Supporting both standard and custom probe lengths, the STW provides flexibility in application – a sensor placed too shallow or too deep in a process stream gives an inaccurate reading, so matching probe length precisely to the pipe or vessel diameter is essential to real measurement accuracy.
Engineering Design of the ABB STW
One of the key benefits of the STW is its compatibility with a broad range of transmitters and control systems. The sensor can be configured to suit different installation requirements, including threaded, flanged, or hygienic connections, letting a single sensor family serve multiple fitting types across a plant rather than requiring a distinct sensor model per connection style.
Built from stainless steel and other corrosion-resistant materials, the STW offers a long service life and stable operation, meeting international standards for safety and performance in pipelines, tanks, or reactors where dependable results under challenging conditions are essential.

Selecting the Right STW Configuration
Most ordering errors with thermowell-based sensors come from the fitting and the insertion depth rather than from the sensing element. Before requesting an ABB STW temperature sensor, collect the following from the existing installation or the P&ID:
- Process connection type and size – threaded, flanged (with flange standard and rating) or hygienic clamp
- Pipe or vessel inside diameter and nozzle height, so the probe tip sits in the representative flow zone
- Process temperature, pressure and flow velocity, which govern thermowell material and wall thickness
- The transmitter or input card the sensor will connect to, and whether the loop expects an RTD or a thermocouple
- Tag number and any nameplate data from the unit being replaced
With this information the connection style, probe length and element type can be matched to the measuring point, instead of relying on a generic length that reads too shallow in a large line or protrudes excessively in a small one.
STW Installation and Commissioning
Fit the thermowell first and pressure-test the connection with the process, then insert the measuring insert so the tip is in firm contact with the bottom of the well; an air gap at the tip slows the response noticeably. Use the correct thread sealant or gasket for the connection type, and avoid mounting in dead legs or directly downstream of mixing points where the temperature is not yet uniform. When wiring to the transmitter, keep sensor cables away from power cables and terminate screens at one end only. During commissioning, compare the reading against a calibrated reference or a neighbouring instrument at stable process conditions before handing the loop over to operations.
Maintenance and Troubleshooting
Because the insert can normally be withdrawn while the thermowell stays in the process, periodic verification is straightforward. Typical symptoms and first checks:
- Erratic or noisy reading – loose terminals, moisture in the head, or induced noise on unscreened cable
- Slow response – insert not bottomed in the well, or fouling on the thermowell surface
- Offset against a reference – element drift, or the wrong sensor type configured at the transmitter
- Open-circuit alarm – broken element or lead, often after vibration damage near the connection head
Applications in Oman and the GCC
In the region, the ABB STW temperature sensor suits heat exchanger outlets, tank farms and utility headers where ambient temperatures are high and many plants sit close to the coast. Stainless steel construction and a sealed connection head help against salt-laden air in Sohar and Duqm, while the hygienic connection option makes the same family usable in food, beverage and water plants.

About brand
ABB is the Swiss-Swedish engineering group for electrification and automation: low voltage drives, motors, circuit breakers and motor control, process instruments and analysers, control systems and robots. It was formed on 5 January 1988 by the merger of two older companies. ASEA was founded in Västerås, Sweden, in 1883 by Ludvig Fredholm to make electric lighting and generators. BBC Brown Boveri was founded in Baden near Zurich in 1891 by Charles E. L. Brown and Walter Boveri. ABB Ltd is incorporated in Switzerland, headquartered in Zurich and listed on the SIX Swiss Exchange and Nasdaq Stockholm.

Choosing an ABB drive
ABB's ACS drive codes are easy to read once you know the pattern. In ACS580-01-046A-4, "ACS580" is the drive family, "01" means a wall-mounted single drive, "046A" is the rated output current (about 46 A) and "-4" means a 380–480 V supply. The family is chosen by application: ACS355 for compact machinery, ACS310 for simple pumps and fans, ACS580 as the general-purpose drive, ACQ580 for water and wastewater with pump functions such as pipe fill and dry-run protection, and ACS880 for heavy industrial duty with direct torque control. Size the drive on the motor's full-load current, not only its kW rating, and allow derating for the high ambient temperatures common in Gulf electrical rooms.
Where ABB products are used
In Oman and the GCC, ABB drives and motors run pumps, fans and compressors in water and wastewater plants, district cooling, oil and gas and industry. ABB flowmeters, level instruments and analysers are used in water utilities, power and desalination plants and refineries, and SACE breakers protect switchboards in buildings and plants.
