WIKA TC10-B Thermocouple for Additional Thermowell
Overview
The WIKA TC10-B is an industrial thermocouple assembly designed for installation in an additional thermowell or protection tube. It combines a connection head, a neck tube with the process-side thread to the thermowell, and a spring-loaded, replaceable measuring insert made from vibration-resistant mineral-insulated metal-sheathed (MIMS) cable. Sensor ranges cover -40 to +1,200 °C, and the large number of possible combinations of thermocouple type, head, insertion length, neck length and connection allows it to suit almost any thermowell dimension and application.
Seven Star LLC supplies the WIKA TC10-B to oil and gas operators, refineries, power stations, chemical plants and EPC contractors across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. It is a common choice where engineers want a standard, well-documented temperature point that can be serviced without opening the process.
Measuring Principle
A thermocouple consists of two wires of different alloys joined at the measuring point. When the measuring point is at a different temperature from the reference end, a small voltage is produced, the thermoelectric effect, and its magnitude depends on the temperature difference and the alloy pair. The WIKA TC10-B uses types K, J, E, N or T to IEC 60584-1 or ASTM E230, with class 1 or class 2 tolerances. Type K and type N cover up to 1,200 °C in class 2, type E up to 900 °C, type J up to 750 °C and type T up to 350 °C; ASTM E230 limits for types K and N extend to 1,260 °C.
The measuring point of the WIKA TC10-B can be ungrounded, which is the standard and electrically isolates the wires from the sheath, or grounded for a faster response. Single and dual thermocouples are available, so a second element can serve as a spare or feed a separate system. For good heat transfer, the insert diameter should match the thermowell bore within 1 mm, and the spring loading presses the insert tip firmly onto the thermowell bottom with up to 10 mm of travel.
Engineering Design of the WIKA TC10-B
WIKA TC10-B measuring inserts are available in 3, 6 and 8 mm diameters per DIN 43735, with sheaths of Alloy 600, 1.4571 or 316L. The neck tube, typically 150 mm long per DIN 43772 and available from 30 to 500 mm, connects the head to the thermowell via threads such as G 1/2 B, G 3/4 B, M20 x 1.5, M18 x 1.5, M14 x 1.5, 1/2 NPT or 3/4 NPT, or via union nut, male nut or compression fitting. Neck tube materials are stainless steel 1.4571 or 316, and the neck keeps the head and any transmitter away from hot process surfaces.
Connection heads for the WIKA TC10-B include the European BSZ, BSZ-H, BS, BSS and BVS designs to EN 50446 and international heads such as KN4-A, 1/4000, 7/8000 and PIH, in aluminium, plastic or stainless steel, with ingress protection up to IP65 or IP66. Cable entries are M20 x 1.5, 1/2 NPT or 3/4 NPT, with plastic, nickel-plated brass or stainless steel glands, Ex e versions and M12 connectors. Heads with LED or LC displays are available when a 4-20 mA transmitter is fitted.
Key Features
The WIKA TC10-B is built for flexible specification and easy maintenance:
- Thermocouple types K, J, E, N and T, single or dual, to IEC 60584-1 or ASTM E230.
- Sensor range from -40 to +1,200 °C, depending on type and class.
- Spring-loaded, replaceable MIMS measuring insert in 3, 6 or 8 mm diameter.
- Fits all standard thermowell designs, including WIKA models such as TW10 to TW30.
- Wide range of connection heads in aluminium, plastic and stainless steel, up to IP66.
- Optional T16 (4-20 mA) or T38 (4-20 mA with HART) head-mounted transmitter.
- Explosion protection under ATEX, IECEx and other schemes, including Ex i zone 0 and Ex e.
- Suitable for SIL 2 safety functions with a SIL-certified T38 transmitter, and SIL 3 with two redundant units.
Industrial Applications
In Oman’s upstream oil and gas facilities, gas processing plants and refineries, the WIKA TC10-B is installed in flanged or threaded thermowells on heaters, furnaces, reactors, flare and fuel gas lines, compressor discharges and exhaust ducts, where temperatures exceed the comfortable range of RTDs. Type K and N elements are common on fired heaters and gas turbine exhausts at power plants in Sohar, Barka and Salalah, while type J and T suit lower-temperature process and utility service.
Chemical plants, fertiliser and metals industries use the WIKA TC10-B for process vessels and kilns, and machine builders apply it to boilers and thermal fluid systems. Because the insert can be exchanged while the thermowell stays in place, maintenance teams can replace a failed element during operation. Seven Star LLC supplies the thermocouple with the insert diameter, insertion length, head, transmitter and Ex approval specified, together with the WIKA data sheet.

Where WIKA instruments are used
WIKA pressure gauges and thermometers give local indication on pumps, vessels, headers and skids in refineries, gas plants, power stations, water treatment and machine building throughout the GCC. Stainless steel gauges such as the 232.50 are specified for corrosive atmospheres and process media, and liquid filling is chosen where vibration or pulsation is present. Transmitters and resistance thermometers feed the control system.Ordering WIKA instruments: what we need
For WIKA pressure gauges send the model, nominal size (for example 63, 100 or 160 mm), scale range and unit, process connection thread and its position (lower or back mount), wetted material and any filling, and accessories such as a diaphragm seal or contacts. For thermometers and probes add stem or insertion length, stem diameter, sensor type and class, and thermowell details. A photo of the dial and of the label on the case usually answers most of these points.Browse WIKA products by category: Pressure Instrumentation, Temperature Instrumentation.
