JUMO flowTRANS DP R Orifice Plate and Meter Run, Type 409602

Description

ISO 5167 orifice plate flow measurement for gas, steam and liquid lines

The JUMO flowTRANS DP R (type 409602) is a primary element for differential pressure flow measurement in single-phase aggressive and non-aggressive gases, steam and liquids. It comes in two forms: the meter run R01 for nominal widths up to DN 40, delivered fully assembled with ring chamber tappings, and the single-part orifice plate R02 for DN 50 and above with single pressure tappings. The measuring insert is a standardised orifice plate to DIN EN ISO 5167-2, which means that the datasheet treats all devices built to the standard as usable without prior calibration. A JUMO dTRANS p02 DELTA or p20 DELTA differential pressure transmitter converts the pressure drop into a proportional flow signal. The design has no moving parts, which gives the long service life that the datasheet highlights.

Choosing R01 or R02

For small lines up to DN 40, the R01 meter run avoids most installation errors, because the inlet and outlet pipe sections are part of the delivered assembly and follow the standard. Its ring chamber tappings reduce the influence of installation faults on accuracy. For DN 50 and above, the R02 orifice plate fits between standard pipe flanges and can carry a valve manifold and the transmitter directly in the compact design, which removes the impulse pipes and their installation cost. Its measuring insert cannot be exchanged, whereas the insert of the R01 can. The diameter of the orifice is calculated from the application checklist, so supply flow range, fluid density, pressure, temperature and pipe diameter.

Mounting and application notes

The datasheet shows the principal arrangement of primary elements after DIN 19216 for liquid, steam and gas. For steam, condensate traps keep identical water columns on both impulse lines, and for liquid and gas the position of the transmitter relative to the tapping decides whether air or condensate can collect. In power, desalination and petrochemical plants orifice meters are a well-understood choice for steam, fuel gas and cooling-water headers because of the global ISO 5167 basis, and the datasheet notes that requirements of the standard on the orifice plate can be checked at any time. Where the highest accuracy is required, ask for a calibration of the flow coefficient on a test bench for the R01.

Materials are chosen from the medium, pressure and temperature, with AISI 316L for the measuring insert as standard. The pressure loss is a trade-off, since a smaller beta ratio d/D produces a larger differential pressure and a better signal, but it permanently loses around 30 to 80 % of that pressure. Pressure tappings can be made as welded, threaded or flanged sockets with a typical design length of about 100 mm, so the choice should match the isolation valve and manifold at site.

Using orifice plates in Oman and the GCC

Orifice plates remain a common flow measurement method in the region’s oil and gas, refining, power and water plants, because they are well understood, do not need calibration on a flow rig when built to ISO 5167, and work for gas, steam and liquids. They are often used for fuel gas, steam, cooling water and process lines, and for flow measurement in packages supplied to oil and gas operators.

The accuracy depends on correct sizing and installation. The orifice calculation must use the real process data, and the straight lengths upstream and downstream must meet the standard. Plates should be checked for wear and damage during shutdowns, as erosion of the edge changes the reading, which matters in lines carrying sand or particles. The differential pressure transmitter and impulse lines should be selected and installed to suit the medium.

For replacement plates, the existing plate stamp or the original sizing calculation helps us match the bore, thickness and material exactly. Where the process data has changed since the plate was designed, a new calculation should be made.

About brand

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used

In Oman and the GCC, JUMO sensors and controllers are used in oil and gas and chemical plants, food and beverage production, plastics and metal heat treatment, HVAC and district cooling, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pools and marine applications.
