JUMO flowTRANS DP P Pitot Tube Flow Probe P01 to P04, 409601

Description

An insertion pitot probe for large pipes, gas lines and steam mains

The JUMO flowTRANS DP P (type 409601) is a family of averaging pitot tubes that measure flow by the differential pressure method in liquids, gases and steam in closed pipelines. The four type series P01 to P04 cover different pipe sizes, temperatures and pressures: P01 and P02 are for liquids and gases, P03 and P04 are for saturated and superheated steam. Because the probe is inserted into the pipe instead of replacing a section of it, the datasheet notes a cost advantage over flanged meters at large nominal widths. The profile is symmetrical, so flow can be measured in both directions, and the static and dynamic pressure is averaged at four measuring points along the probe, which allows short inlet and outlet sections. A JUMO dTRANS p02 DELTA or p20 DELTA differential pressure transmitter completes the system.

How to choose the type series

The datasheet selects by medium first and then by temperature and pressure. For a liquid or gas line up to 200 °C at 25 bar choose P01 with a welding screw connection. For higher temperature or pressure, choose P02 with a mounting pipe and flange, in 1.4571 or an alloy. For steam up to 200 °C at 16 bar choose P03, and for steam up to 450 °C at 100 bar choose P04. The material of the mounting parts must match the pipe material to remain weldable. The compact design is the more economical option, while the remote design is chosen when medium temperature, ambient temperature, space or read-out conditions require the transmitter to sit away from the probe.

Installation notes for each medium

Never insert the probe from above for liquids, because rising air bubbles distort the result, and mount the transmitter below the pressure outlet. For gases never insert from below, because liquid carried in the gas can rise in the impulse lines, so mount from the side or above with the transmitter above the outlet. For steam, fit from the side with the transmitter below the outlet, keep the water columns in the two condensate traps at identical height and leave the traps uninsulated. Control, throttle and shut-off valves should be located downstream. Proven runs include 7 x DN inlet and 3 x DN outlet after a constriction, and 24 x DN inlet and 4 x DN outlet after a regulation unit. Poor flow conditions can cost about 3 % precision, which a comparative point measurement can correct.

Typical Gulf uses include cooling-water mains, flare and fuel gas headers, compressed air and process steam lines in power and petrochemical plants.

Using pitot flow probes in Oman and the GCC

Averaging pitot tubes are a practical choice in the region for large water pipes, cooling water lines, compressed air and gas headers and steam mains, where a full-bore flowmeter would be expensive or difficult to install. Desalination and power plants, district cooling systems and refineries all have large lines where an insertion probe can be fitted through a single connection. Hot-tap installation is also possible on some lines, which avoids a shutdown, but this must be planned with the plant owner and follow site procedures.

The accuracy depends on straight pipe runs and on correct orientation of the probe. For steam service, condensate pots and correct impulse line routing are needed, and impulse lines should be shaded and insulated where sun heating could affect the reading. The differential pressure transmitter should be selected for the expected range and static pressure.

The sizing data for the probe should come from the actual operating conditions rather than the line design maximum, because a probe sized far above the real flow gives a small differential pressure and poorer resolution at normal flow.

About brand

JUMO is the German maker of temperature sensors, process controllers, pressure transmitters and liquid analysis instruments. Moritz Kurt Juchheim founded it in Fulda in 1948 as M. K. Juchheim KG, making glass thermometers with six employees. The name JUMO comes from the founder's name. It is still a family company headquartered in Fulda, and the parent company has been called JUMO GmbH & Co. KG since 2003.

Choosing a temperature sensor starts with the range and accuracy. A Pt100 RTD is accurate and stable from about -200 to 600 °C and is the usual choice in process plants. A thermocouple (type K or J, for example) covers much higher temperatures and responds faster but is less accurate. The wiring also matters: a 3-wire or 4-wire Pt100 connection cancels the resistance of the cable, while a 2-wire connection adds an error that grows with cable length. That is why a head-mounted transmitter is often fitted close to the sensor.

Where JUMO products are used

In Oman and the GCC, JUMO sensors and controllers are used in oil and gas and chemical plants, food and beverage production, plastics and metal heat treatment, HVAC and district cooling, water and wastewater treatment, swimming pools and marine applications.
