Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD Remote Toxic Gas Detector
Description
Overview
The Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD (Remote Toxic Detector) is a flameproof gas transmitter designed for use with Honeywell Sensepoint toxic and oxygen sensors. The sensor can be mounted directly on the transmitter or remotely, up to 30 metres (100 feet) away, so the transmitter and its display can be placed where they are easy to see and reach while the sensor sits at the point where gas is most likely to collect. The data sheet positions it for industrial manufacturing, power plants, waste water facilities, utilities, food and beverage production, refineries and chemical plants, onshore oil and gas terminals, production platforms and exploration and drilling.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD to oil and gas operators, EPC contractors, utilities and process plants in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Hydrogen sulphide detection on sour gas facilities, chlorine and ammonia detection in water and waste water plants, and oxygen deficiency monitoring in enclosed spaces are typical duties in Oman. Our team in Muscat offers engineering support, helping select sensor gas, range, housing material and accessories for each detection point.
Measurement Principle
The Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD itself is a transmitter: it powers the connected Sensepoint sensor, reads its signal, displays the gas concentration and manages outputs and alarms. The Sensepoint toxic and oxygen sensors use electrochemical cells, which, in general terms, produce a small current proportional to the concentration of the target gas reaching the electrode. Honeywell specifies Surecell technology to maintain performance at extremes of temperature and humidity and lists long-life sensors. The sensor connects to the transmitter as a 2-wire 4-20 mA source device, either at the M25 bottom entry or through a remote junction box or duct mounting assembly.
The Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD compares the reading against two programmable alarm levels and drives three relays and a 4-20 mA output. Default current levels indicate fault (below 1.0 mA), inhibit during configuration (2.0 or 4.0 mA), normal gas measurement (4.0 to 20.0 mA) and over range (22.0 mA). Outputs are inhibited automatically during adjustment, which reduces the risk of false alarms at the control panel during maintenance. A generic 4-20 mA input option also allows other compatible sensors to be connected.
Engineering Design of the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD
The Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD housing is epoxy-painted LM25 aluminium alloy (about 2.0 kg) or 316 stainless steel (about 5.0 kg), with an integral mounting plate for four M8 bolts and an optional pipe mounting kit for horizontal or vertical pipes. European ATEX and IECEx versions have two M20 side entries and one M25 bottom entry. The transmitter is rated IP66 and the sensor IP67. Certification is listed as ATEX Ex II 2 GD Ex d IIC Gb T6 and IECEx Ex d IIC Gb T6 for ambient temperatures of –40 to +65 °C, with dust protection Ex tb IIIC T85 °C Db.
The large tri-colour backlit LCD of the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD shows digits, a bar graph and icons; it is steady green in normal operation, flashing yellow for a fault and flashing red for an alarm. Range, relay operation, alarm set points and tag number are adjusted with non-intrusive magnetic switches, allowing one-person maintenance without opening the enclosure. The Sensepoint sensor has an intrinsically safe section with a removable cartridge, so the cartridge can be changed without a hot work permit. Supply is 18 to 32 V DC (24 V DC nominal) with a maximum consumption of 5 W, and the 18 screw terminals accept 0.5 to 2.5 mm² wire.
Key Features
The main features of the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD from the Honeywell data sheet are listed below.
- The sensor of the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD can be mounted directly or up to 30 m from the transmitter, ideal for points that are difficult to access.
- It works with Honeywell Sensepoint sensors for H2S, CO, NH3, Cl2, O2, H2, SO2, NO and NO2.
- The tri-colour backlit display shows normal, fault and alarm status clearly, even from a distance.
- Three relays rated 5 A at 250 V AC provide two programmable alarms and one fault output.
- The 4-20 mA output is selectable as sink or source to suit different control systems.
- Non-intrusive magnetic switches allow configuration and calibration without opening the flameproof housing.
- Aluminium LM25 or 316 stainless steel housings are available for normal and corrosive environments.
- The common XCD transmitter platform reduces training, spares and stock costs across a site.
Industrial Applications
In Oman the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD is well suited to H2S monitoring around wellheads, separators, sour gas plants and pump stations, where the transmitter can be fixed at an accessible height while the sensor is installed close to the potential leak source. In desalination and waste water plants the remote configuration helps monitor chlorine dosing rooms and digesters, while ammonia versions suit refrigeration plants and fertiliser facilities in Sur and Sohar. Oxygen sensors protect personnel in nitrogen-purged enclosures and analyser shelters, and duct mounting assemblies allow sampling in ventilation systems.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Honeywell Sensepoint XCD RTD along with related Honeywell detectors such as the Honeywell SPXCDASMTXF Sensepoint XCD IR flammable detector, the Honeywell XNX Excel gas detector and the Honeywell Searchline Excel Plus open path detector. Our engineers in Muscat support customers across Oman and the GCC with detector selection, layout review and spare sensor cartridges.

About brand
Fixed gas and flame detection takes up the largest share of our Honeywell listing: Searchline Excel open path detectors, Sensepoint XCD and XRL point detectors, the XNX transmitter and the FS24X Plus flame detector. Honeywell, which dates from 1906 and is headquartered in Charlotte, USA, also makes SmartLine pressure transmitters and VersaFlow flowmeters for process plants.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier of Honeywell gas detectors, replacement sensors, transmitters and controller parts for sites in Oman and the GCC.

Open path infrared detection is represented by the Searchline Excel and the newer Searchline Excel Plus. Point detection includes the Sensepoint XCD in flammable and toxic versions, for example the SPXCDALMG1 hydrogen detector, the Sensepoint XRL and the XNX universal transmitter. The FS24X Plus is a triple infrared flame detector. Replacement cells such as the SR-X2V oxygen sensor and the SR-W-MP75C MICROpeL combustible sensor are also listed. Process instruments include SmartLine STG700 and STG800 gauge pressure transmitters, the STR82D remote seal transmitter and the VersaFlow Coriolis mass flow meter. Recorder consumables such as chart pens are also sourced.
Where Honeywell detectors and transmitters are used
Gas and flame detectors guard wellheads, compressor stations, tank farms, loading bays, process units and utility buildings, and report to the fire and gas system. Open path units watch plant boundaries and long pipe racks. SmartLine transmitters and VersaFlow meters measure pressure and flow in refining, gas processing, chemicals and power.
Ordering Honeywell gas detection parts: what we need
Send the full part number from the label, such as SPXCDALMG1 or 02104-N-XSSA, and the serial number. For gas detectors state the target gas and measuring span, housing material, cable entry thread, output (4-20 mA, relays, Modbus) and the approval required.
