AUMA GK 40.2 Double-Stage Bevel Gearbox (16,000 Nm)

Description

Overview

AUMA GK 40.2 is the largest bevel gearbox in the AUMA GK range, a double-stage unit rated for up to 16,000 Nm of valve torque with the actuator turned 90 degrees to the stem. It exists for very large gate valves and globe valves, and for valves whose seating torque is far beyond the output of any direct-mounted multi-turn actuator. With 250 kg of housing and a 40 mm input shaft it is a robust, crane-lifted component, and its high ratios of 16:1 and 22:1 keep the input torque within the capability of the SA 14.6 to SA 25.1 actuator class.

Seven Star LLC is the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA and supplies the AUMA GK 40.2 to major water, power and energy projects in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC.

Double-Stage Working Principle of the AUMA GK 40.2

The AUMA GK 40.2 is one of three double-stage GK sizes, together with the GK 30.2 and GK 35.2. Two bevel stages in series achieve high total ratios with moderate gear sizes, and the Palloid face-hobbed toothing keeps noise low and efficiency high even at 16:1 and 22:1. Counterclockwise rotation of the output is available as an alternative to the standard clockwise-to-clockwise direction, instead of the GW 14.1 reversing gearbox that applies to the single-stage sizes.

The 16:1 ratio has a factor of 14.4 and needs 1,111 Nm of nominal input torque to deliver 16,000 Nm of valve torque. The 22:1 ratio has a factor of 19.8 and needs 808 Nm for the same 16,000 Nm. A special 22:1 version, available on request, is rated for 10,000 Nm and needs only 505 Nm of input torque with a 30 mm input shaft. The permissible modulating torque is available on request, and the average output torque for ATEX open-close duty is 8,000 Nm for both main ratios.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GK 40.2

Valve attachment is F40 according to EN ISO 5210 (G7 according to DIN 3210), with output drive types A, B1, B2, B3 and B4 and special attachments. The input shaft is 40 mm for both main ratios. Input mounting flanges allow SA 16.2 and SAR 16.2 on every ratio (F16, 160 kg), an SA 25.1 or SAR 25.1 on the 16:1 ratio (F25, 300 kg) and an SA 14.6 or SAR 14.6 on the 22:1 special ratio (F14, 80 kg).

Enclosure protection is IP68 (8 m head of water, up to 96 hours), corrosion protection is KS with KX optional for extremely saline atmospheres, and the standard temperature range is -40 to +80 degrees Celsius with -60 to +60 and 0 to +120 degree options. The standard handwheel diameter for hand operation is 800 mm, which is also the special size, and a lockable handwheel and WSH limit switching device can be added.

Ratio and Actuator Data of the AUMA GK 40.2

The AUMA GK 40.2 offers two main ratios and one special ratio, with the following AUMA data.

Ratio Factor Max. valve torque Max. input torque Input shaft Suitable actuator

The modulating torque for the AUMA GK 40.2 is available on request, as it is for the GK 35.2.

Key Features

The AUMA GK 40.2 is selected when the valve is simply too large for anything else in the bevel gearbox range:

  • At 16,000 Nm this is the highest valve torque in the GK family, delivered by a double-stage bevel design.
  • Ratios of 16:1 and 22:1, with factors of 14.4 and 19.8, need 1,111 Nm and 808 Nm at the input.
  • A special 22:1 variant for 10,000 Nm needs only 505 Nm and a 30 mm input shaft.
  • F40 attachment to EN ISO 5210 (G7 to DIN 3210) with output drive types A and B1 to B4.
  • SA 14.6, SA 16.2 and SA 25.1 actuators mount through F14, F16 or F25 flanges with 80 to 300 kg permissible weight.
  • At 250 kg including the output drive sleeve and grease filling, the housing needs crane handling.
  • An 800 mm handwheel is standard for manual duty, with lockable and WSH signalling options.
  • Counterclockwise rotation is available as an alternative to the standard direction.

Industrial Applications

Very large gate valves on raw-water transmission mains, big globe valves in power-plant steam and feedwater systems and isolation valves on large pumping-station headers are the typical applications of the AUMA GK 40.2. In the Sultanate of Oman, bulk water transfer schemes and combined power and desalination plants are the natural users, and the 22:1 ratio lets an SA 16.2 handle a valve that would otherwise demand the next frame size of multi-turn actuator, at the cost of a longer stroke time.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the GK 40.2 with SA actuators and controls to EPC contractors and utilities across Oman and the GCC, including projects at Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.
