AUMA GS 400 Heavy Part-Turn Worm Gearbox (180,000 Nm)

Description

Overview

AUMA GS 400 belongs to AUMA’s heavy gearbox class, the GS 315, GS 400 and GS 500 sizes that take part-turn automation into the six-figure Newton-metre range. With 180,000 Nm of valve torque in open-close duty, a 54:1 base ratio and a family of GZ 35.1 primary reduction stages that stretch the total ratio to 1,728:1, it is meant for valves whose discs and bodies are engineered individually, such as large isolation butterfly valves and penstock-style closures. The base casting alone weighs 980 kg, and with a GZ stage the assembly reaches about 1,100 kg before the multi-turn actuator is added.

Seven Star LLC is the official trusted supplier and regional supplier for AUMA, and we handle the AUMA GS 400 as an engineered project item for customers in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC. Gearbox, GZ primary reduction, actuator and valve adapter are checked against AUMA’s combination tables before an order is placed, which prevents costly mismatches on a part that is measured in tonnes.

Operating Principle of the AUMA GS 400

The AUMA GS 400 uses a worm gear with a spheroidal cast iron worm wheel for open-close duty, mounted in a cast iron housing and self-locking at standstill under normal service conditions. The adjustable swing angle covers 0 to 135 degrees as standard and is set to 92 degrees at the factory, while positive end stops by travelling nut allow the end positions to be set sensitively. A pointer cover indicates the position continuously, and a sealed pointer cover or a buried-service protection cover is optional.

The direct 54:1 ratio gives a factor of 24.3 and needs 13.5 turns for 90 degrees, with a maximum input torque of 7,407 Nm. Adding a GZ 35.1 planetary stage multiplies the ratio: 4:1 gives 216:1, 6:1 gives 324:1, 8:1 gives 432:1, 16:1 gives 864:1 and 32:1 gives 1,728:1, with factors rising to 661 and maximum input torques falling to 272 Nm. Guaranteed end stop strength for input side operation to AWWA is 450 Nm on the 8:1, 16:1 and 32:1 stages, and 450 Nm also applies to the special 4:1, 6:1 and 8:1 stages available on request.

Engineering Design of the AUMA GS 400

The valve attachment is F48 or F60 with a maximum shaft diameter of 250 mm, and the maximum valve torque depends on the ratio: 180,000 Nm for the 54:1, 8:1 (432:1), 16:1 and 32:1 versions, 125,000 Nm for the 4:1 (216:1) and 6:1 (324:1) versions and 64,000 Nm for the special 432:1 variant with the 8:1 stage. Input shafts run from 80 mm on the direct ratio down to 30 mm on the highest, which is why the actuator size drops from an SA 35.1 on the direct ratio to an SA 14.2 on the 1,728:1 combination.

Typical combined weights including the multi-turn actuator, coupling, grease and handwheel are 1,405 kg for AUMA GS 400 with an SA 35.1, 1,260 kg with an SA 25.1 on a GZ 35.1 4:1 stage, 1,183 kg with an SA 16.2, 1,153 kg with an SA 14.6 and 1,148 kg with an SA 14.2. Operating times at 50 Hz run from 51 seconds with an SA 35.1 at 16 rpm to 810 seconds with an SA 14.6 on the 864:1 combination, and are reduced by 17 percent at 60 Hz. The standard colour is AUMA silver-grey and the standard worm wheel material for open-close duty is spheroidal cast iron.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA GS 400 is a specialist solution for valves at the very top of the torque scale: large-diameter butterfly isolation valves on raw-water transmission pipelines, seawater intake and outfall valves, and dampers or diverters in large power-generation ducts that require specific sizing. In Oman’s utility and energy sectors these are typically one-off, project-engineered valves where the gearbox ratio is picked to match the actuator and the required closing time, which can run to 810 seconds for the slowest combination.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA GS 400 and its GZ primary reduction stages to EPC contractors, valve manufacturers and utilities in Oman and the GCC, and we coordinate with the valve builder on the F48 or F60 interface. See also the AUMA GS part-turn gearbox range and the AUMA SA 10.2 multi-turn actuator for lighter duty. For related drive options, see the AUMA SA 07.2 multi-turn actuator.

About brand
Electric actuators for industrial valves are the core of AUMA's business. Founded in 1964 and based in Müllheim, Germany, the company builds multi-turn, part-turn and linear actuators with matching gearboxes and actuator controls, in modular combinations that are fixed at the time of order. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing AUMA actuators, gearboxes, fail-safe units and the SIMA2 master station for valve automation projects and replacements in Oman and the GCC.

AUMA actuator and gearbox types

SA multi-turn actuators handle open-close duty on gate and globe valves, and SAR is the modulating version; the listing includes the SA 07.2, SA 10.2 and SA 25.1. SAEx and SAREx are the explosion-proof equivalents. Part-turn duty on ball and butterfly valves is covered by SQ and the modulating SQR, or by an SA actuator combined with a GS part-turn gearbox. LE linear thrust units convert multi-turn output to thrust, and GHT multi-turn gearboxes extend the torque range up to 120,000 Nm. PROFOX is the compact actuator line. Special items include the seawater-resistant SGM and SGMR part-turn actuators with bronze housings, the SVC and SVCR globe valve actuators and the FQM fail-safe unit. Integral controls come as AM or AC versions.

Where AUMA electric actuators are used

AUMA actuators are found in water, power, oil and gas, marine and general industry. In practice that means isolation and control valves in water treatment and pumping stations, power plant steam and cooling systems, tank farms and pipelines, and sluice gates and dampers.
