Overview

AUMA SQEx 05.2 is the smallest frame of the explosion-proof SQEx .2 range and the drive AUMA offers for compact quarter-turn valves in potentially explosive atmospheres. It has the same 50 Nm to 150 Nm tripping torque window as the standard SQ 05.2, plus a documented run torque of 52.5 Nm for 15 minutes of running time, and it is certified under DEKRA 13ATEX0016 X for the markings listed in AUMA’s data sheet.

Reading the Explosion Protection Data

AUMA documents several markings for the AUMA SQEx 05.2. The standard versions are II 2G Ex db eb IIC T4 or T3 Gb and II 2G Ex h IIC T4 or T3 Gb for gas atmospheres, together with II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db for dust. An optional marking, II 2G Ex db IIC T4 or T3 Gb, is also listed. Which one applies to a given actuator is set by the order, and the name plate is the final reference for the exact version supplied.

The ordering engineer should compare the temperature class and gas group on the area classification drawing with the marking on the quotation. The documented ambient range for the explosion-proof version is -30 °C to +40 °C or +60 °C, depending on the version, with options for -40 °C and -60 °C minimum temperatures. Because this is narrower than the +70 °C of the standard SQ, hot Gulf sites in direct sun need the +60 °C version checked carefully.

Engineering Design of the AUMA SQEx 05.2

Mechanically, the AUMA SQEx 05.2 follows the SQ 05.2: F05/F07 flange with F10 option, shaft capacity of 25.4 mm cylindrical, 22 mm square or 22 mm two-flat, a 160 mm handwheel needing 11 or 16 turns for 90 degrees, and eight operating times from 4 s to 63 s at 50 Hz. The motor is a 3-phase squirrel-cage unit protected by PTC thermistors as standard, which require a suitable tripping device in the explosion-proof controls.

Weight is about 25 kg, or 30 kg with base and lever, slightly more than the 21 kg of the standard SQ because of the explosion-proof construction. The electrical connection is the AUMA Ex plug/socket connector (KT) with screw-type motor terminals and spring-clamp control terminals as standard, and an Ex plug/socket connector with terminal blocks (KES) as an option. Enclosure protection is IP68 with a terminal compartment that is additionally sealed against the actuator interior.

Procurement of the AUMA SQEx 05.2 begins with the hazardous-area documents rather than the valve. Collect the area classification drawing, the gas group and the required temperature class, and confirm that the actuator marking, the controls and the cable glands are all certified to suit. A mismatch found at inspection can delay commissioning far longer than a delivery lead time.

Then check the thermal side: the documented ambient range is narrower than for the standard SQ, so verify the maximum site temperature in direct sun against the +40 °C or +60 °C version.

Industrial Applications

The AUMA SQEx 05.2 is relevant wherever small quarter-turn valves sit inside classified areas: fuel gas skids, solvent handling, chemical dosing in petrochemical plants, and utility lines at refineries and gas processing facilities.
