AUMA SAVEx Explosion-Proof Variable-Speed Multi-Turn Actuator
Overview
AUMA SAVEx multi-turn actuators bring variable speed into potentially explosive atmospheres. They are explosion-proof actuators for open-close duty and positioning duty (classes A and B), paired with the ACVExC 01.2 actuator controls, and extend the established AUMA SAEx range with a speed control ratio of 1:10. Six sizes, SAVEx 07.2 to SAVEx 16.2, cover a torque range of 10 Nm to 1,000 Nm. AUMA positions them for valve automation in the oil and gas industry, where slow and safe valve movement is often as important as the ability to move fast.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the AUMA SAVEx to refineries, gas processing facilities, terminals and chemical plants in the Sultanate of Oman and across the GCC. Our Muscat instrumentation division assists with hazardous-area documentation, temperature class selection and the matching ACVExC controls, and delivers genuine AUMA equipment with certificates.
Explosion Protection and Operating Principle of the AUMA SAVEx
The AUMA SAVEx is qualified under ATEX and IECEx. The marking for standard actuators is II 2G Ex db eb IIC T4 or T3 Gb for gas atmospheres, with Ex h variants, and II 2D Ex tb IIIC T130 °C or T190 °C Db for combustible dust; options with Ex db IIC are also listed. The ATEX certificate is DEKRA 11 ATEX 0008 X. Temperature class T4 is available up to +40 °C ambient and T3 up to +60 °C, so the correct class must be selected for the site, which is a practical point for outdoor installations in hot Gulf climates.
Variable speed is provided by the frequency converter in the ACVExC 01.2 controls, which supply a special 3-phase AC motor from 1-phase or 3-phase mains while compensating for voltage and frequency variations and removing starting current peaks. In a hazardous area the benefits are concrete: soft start and soft stop reduce mechanical shock on the valve, speed profiles for up to ten travel sections keep closing speed within what the pipeline can tolerate, and emergency operation can run at a predefined speed. During emergency operation, soft start and soft stop remain effective while the standard speed profile is deactivated, so the safe state is reached quickly without abandoning gentle end-position behaviour.
Engineering Design of the AUMA SAVEx
The AUMA SAVEx builds on the flameproof AUMA SAEx .2 housing with limit and torque sensing, a handwheel for manual operation with a 8:1 reduction ratio (4:1 for 24–216 rpm), and a flameproof motor with thermoswitches. Enclosure protection is IP68 with the terminal compartment additionally double sealed against the actuator interior, corrosion protection is KS as standard (KX and KX-G optional), and the ambient range is –30 °C to +40 °C or +60 °C depending on temperature class, with options to –40 °C and –60 °C.
Valve attachment follows EN ISO 5210, flanges F07 to F16, with DIN 3210 optional. The electrical connection uses the AUMA plug/socket connector in the explosion-proof version. Three speed ranges at 50 Hz are available: 6–60, 12–108 and 24–216 rpm (6–60 rpm only on the SAVEx 16.2). Sound pressure level is below 72 dB(A) and the actuators comply with the ATEX Directive 2014/34/EU together with the Machinery, Low Voltage, EMC and RoHS directives.
Key Features
The AUMA SAVEx offers the following advantages in hazardous areas:
- ATEX and IECEx qualification allows variable-speed actuation in zones with explosive gas or combustible dust.
- A 1:10 speed control ratio removes the need to compromise between slow safe operation and fast emergency response.
- Soft start and soft stop reduce stress on valves, gearboxes and stem threads that are costly to replace in hazardous zones.
- Speed profiles for up to ten travel sections protect pipelines from pressure surges during closing.
- Multiport valve operation positions up to 16 ports, as used on production manifolds and sampling bypass valves.
- Programmable emergency and failure speed setpoints bring the valve to its safe position as quickly as the process permits.
- Fieldbus control, data logging, process controller (PID) and Bluetooth interface are available through the ACVExC 01.2 controls.
- Optional intermediate position switches, tandem switches and a magnetic limit and torque transmitter extend signalling and non-intrusive setting.
Industrial Applications
The AUMA SAVEx is intended for the oil and gas value chain: wellhead and manifold valves, multiport valves that combine flows from different sources, and valves on loading, pipeline and tank-farm systems. AUMA also notes the multiport function for 4-way valves used to fill coke drums. In Oman, equivalent duties exist at upstream facilities in the interior, at the Sohar and Duqm industrial and port zones, and at gas processing and refining sites, where hazardous-area approvals and long service life are mandatory.
In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the AUMA SAVEx with ACVExC 01.2 controls and hazardous-area documentation, and coordinates specification with EPC contractors and plant owners. For fixed-speed explosion-proof duty, the AUMA SAEx remains the standard choice, and for continuous modulation in hazardous areas we can quote the AUMA SARVEx. Contact us with your zone classification, gas group, temperature class and valve torque and we will match the actuator. For hazardous-area projects the AUMA SAVEx lets the designer keep a single explosion-proof actuator family for both fixed-speed and speed-controlled valves, and the AUMA SAVEx ties its speed profiles to the same ACVExC 01.2 controls that the rest of the installation can share. Related AUMA products worth comparing with the AUMA SAVEx include the AUMA SAV, the AUMA SARVEx and the AUMA SAEx explosion-proof actuator, which cover neighbouring duty types and sizes.
