Selectarc Inox 2209B E2209-15 Basic Duplex Electrode

Description

Basic coated electrode for 2205-type duplex steel

The Selectarc Inox 2209B is the basic coated version of Selectarc 22 9 3 duplex stick electrode. It produces an austenitic-ferritic deposit classified AWS A5.4 E2209-15 and ISO 3581-A / EN 1600 E 22 9 3 N L B 4 2. The weld metal combines very high tensile strength with resistance to pitting, crevice and stress corrosion in chloride media such as seawater, and it can operate at temperatures up to 250 °C.

According to the data sheet the electrode is easy to handle, with a stable arc, easily removed slag and regular beads. It is intended for butt welding and cladding of duplex plate, pipe and castings of similar composition used in pumps, pressure vessels and piping exposed to chloride-containing solutions, and for impellers or other components where strength and corrosion resistance are needed together.

Basic or rutile duplex electrode?

Selectarc offers the 22 9 3 composition with two coatings. The rutile-basic Inox 2209 (E2209-17) runs on AC or DC and gives a smooth bead finish, which suits general fabrication. The basic Inox 2209B (E2209-15) runs on DC+ only and its data sheet shows clearly higher impact values, above 80 J at -40 °C. That makes the basic version the usual choice for thick sections, restrained joints, and pipework where the specification calls for impact testing at low temperature.

The listed base metals are UNS S31803 (2205, 1.4462), S32304 (1.4362), S32900 (329, 1.4460) and the cast grades G-X8CrNiN26-7 (1.4347) and G-X6CrNiMo24-8-2 (1.4463). For 2507 or other super duplex grades, a 25 9 4 type consumable is normally specified instead.

Practical welding guidance

Redry the electrodes for 2 to 3 hours at 250–300 °C. Hold them with a slight inclination and keep the arc short. Interpass temperature must stay below 150 °C, which protects the phase balance and helps prevent intermetallic precipitation in multi-pass welds.

As with any duplex work, the ferrite content of the weld depends on heat input, cooling rate and dilution. Procedure qualifications often include ferrite measurement and a corrosion test, so share these requirements with your welding engineer when planning the job. Root runs in duplex pipe are frequently made by GTAW, with stick electrodes used for fill and cap passes.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Selectarc welding and brazing products

The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.

Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need

Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
