Selectarc Inox 2209 E2209-17 Duplex Stainless Electrode

Description

Duplex electrode for chloride-resistant joints

The Selectarc Inox 2209 is a rutile-basic stick electrode that deposits an austenitic-ferritic (duplex) weld metal. It is classified AWS A5.4 E2209-17 and ISO 3581-A / EN 1600 E 22 9 3 N L R 3 2. Selectarc states that the deposit can operate up to 250 °C and resists pitting, crevice and stress corrosion in chloride-containing media such as sea water.

The electrode welds in all positions except vertical down, with a stable arc, regular drop transfer, easy slag removal and finely rippled beads. Main applications are butt welding and cladding of duplex steels and castings in pumps, vessels and piping systems exposed to chloride solutions, and impellers or other parts that need high strength together with corrosion resistance.

Base materials

Listed base metals are UNS S31803 (2205, 1.4462), S32304 (1.4362), S32900 (329, 1.4460) and the cast grades G-X8CrNiN26-7 (1.4347) and G-X6CrNiMo24-8-2 (1.4463). The weld metal is over-alloyed in nickel compared with 2205 plate, a standard approach that restores the austenite-ferrite balance in the as-welded condition.

Getting the phase balance right

Duplex welds depend on heat input and cooling rate. Too little heat gives excess ferrite and lower toughness; too much, or a high interpass temperature, risks intermetallic phases. Selectarc asks for an interpass temperature below 150 °C, a short arc and a slight electrode inclination. Redry for 2 to 3 hours at 250–300 °C. Procedure qualifications for duplex often add ferrite measurement and a corrosion test, so state those requirements early.

For super duplex grades such as 2507, a higher-alloyed 25-9 type consumable is normally used instead of 2209.

2209 is also widely used to join duplex to carbon steel or to austenitic stainless steel, provided the procedure accounts for dilution. On thin-walled duplex tube, the 2.5 mm size at 50–75 A helps keep heat input low; on thicker sections, 3.2 and 4.0 mm electrodes fill faster while the interpass limit still controls total heat. Cleanliness matters as much as with any stainless steel: use dedicated tools and remove all slag before the next pass.

About brand
Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company. Selectarc welding and brazing products The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory. Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
